Dear Pali-folks,
I teach Asian religions here at Loyola University,
and I've taught Sanskrit here and there. I'm not a
Buddhist, but I have taken a shot at meditating a few
times. I've studied Sanskrit for 20 years, and I've
read some stuff in the literary Prakrits --
particularly Kalidasa.
I want to learn Pali since I teach an introductory
course in Buddhism every other year. Whenever I come
to a Pali passage I immediately hunt down the page for
a Sanskrit "chaya" --and this makes me feel like quite
a slacker. I've had some Pali text books hanging
around for years, and last summer I even bought the
dictionary by Rhys David & Stede. So perhaps this
list serve will help me make my start!
Also, I once 'translated' a long Buddhist text
(Tattvasangraha) into English.
peaceful wishes,
Tim Cahill
