Hi, Derek, Sean and friends,

DC> I'm glad it's you who volunteered to do the commentary! I'll just
DC> follow along.

I'm glad you follow along :)

>> Kaa uppatti?

DC> What is kaa? I can't find a satisfactory explanation for it in the
DC> PED.

uppatti is female, so is kaa.

>> bodhima.n.dato

DC> Is that ablative? If so, why bodhima.n.dato and not just
DC> bodhima.n.daa?

This is a common alternant of ablative, see Duroiselle's Grammar, page
24 ff.

>> aa.naapesi

DC> "Sent for," i.e., "had brought to him" rather than commanded?

Aa.naapeti - to give an order, to enjoin, to command.

>> "raahulakumaara.m

DC> Isn't this just "Rahula the son"? I wondered why you'd left kumaara
DC> untranslated.

Thank you, indeed 'Rahula the son'.

So the current version is:

338. Kacci abhi.nhasa.mvaasaa'ti raahulasutta.m. Kaa uppatti? Bhagavaa

'I wonder whether because of continuous living together' - says Rahula
sutta. On what occasion? The Blessed One, having awakened to the
highest wisdom, from ground under the Bodhi tree went in due course of
time to Kapilavatthu. There when [his] son Rahula (* Ro: Vin. 1.82)
asked for going forth by way of inheritance: 'Contemplative, give me
going forth by way of inheritance', he commanded Saariputta Thera:
'Give going forth to [my] son Rahula'. All what is said about this in
Khandhaka-A.t.thakathaa (Mahavagga-A.t.thakathaa, paragraph 105, Ro:
5.1004) should be grasped. And [his] son Rahula, in development of
this going forth, was given higher ordination by Saariputta Thera, and
his teacher in the proper ways of doing the formal acts of the Sangha
was Mahamoggalana Thera.
