Hi, Derek and friends,

'I wonder whether because of (* Ablative) continuous living together'
- says Rahula sutta. On which occasion? The Blessed One, having
awakened to the highest wisdom, from ground under the Bodhi tree went
in due course of time to Kapilavatthu. There when Rahula Kumara (*
Ro: Vin. 1.82) asked for ordination by way of inheritance:
'Contemplative, give me ordination by way of inheritance', he
commanded Saariputta Thera: 'Ordain Rahula Kumara'. All what is said
in this Khandhaka-A.t.thakathaa (Mahavagga-A.t.thakathaa, paragraph
105, Ro: 5.1004) should be grasped. And Rahula Kumara, in development
of this going forth, was given higher ordination by Sariputta Thera,
and his instructor in ways of action (?) was Mahamoggalana Thera.

DC> The Buddha is presumably addressing his son, Raahula:

DC> 335. "Kacci abhi.nhasa.mvaasaa naavajaanaasi pa.n.dita.m,
DC> ukkaadhaaro manussaana.m kacci apacito tayaa."

DC> --- Sn II.11

DC> kacci = question, "is it that?" etc.
DC> abhi.nha = continuously, repeatedly, often
DC> sa.mvaasaa = living with, intimacy, intercourse
DC> (instrumental? ablative?)
DC> na = not
DC> avajaanaasi = you deny, you despise (2nd person singular)
DC> pa.n.dita.m = wise (accusative)

DC> ukkaadhaaro = torchbearer (nominative singular)
DC> manussaana.m = of/for men, human beings (genitive/dative plural)
DC> kacci = question, "is it that?" etc.
DC> apacito = honored, worshipped, esteemed
DC> (nominative singular)
DC> tayaa = by you (instrumental, 2nd person singular,
DC> personal pronoun)

DC> MY TRANSLATION

DC> "Do you, due to frequent intimacy, not despise the wise one?
DC> Is the torchbearer of mankind honored by you?"

DC> (I must admit, I couldn't get that first line without looking at K.
DC> R. Norman, but I found the second line easy enough.)

DC> K. R. NORMAN TRANSLATION

DC> "Do you not despise the wise man because of living with him
DC> constantly?
DC> Is the one who holds up the torch for men honoured by you?"
