Some minor issues for the translator (or the pedant!):
(i) The verb in our first sentence, carati, is present tense. Should
we use the "historic present" in English? Or does that make the
transition to the aorist for the remainder of the narrative too
awkward?
(ii) In the second sentence, pa.tipanno is a past participle -- at
least I think it is. But you can't really translate it as a past
participle in English -- you have to say something like "following"
or "having gone along."
Anyway, let's not spend a whole year producing a "perfect"
translation of two sentences!
