Piya,

PT> Good for you, Russian is an East Slavic language, part of the Indo-European family to
PT> which Sanskrit and Pali belongs. This helps in Dharma propagation in your country.

Hopefully it will. I am a Ukrainian (all Ukrainians know Russian), and
the only Ukrainian so far to translate suttas. At least after I'll
finish the textbook some others will be able to learn Pali.

PT> I will be posting my 26-page reflection on the problems of "Translating Buddhist
PT> Sutras" (1989) in my website www.dharma.per.sg in due course.

I'll be privileged to learn more about different aspects of
translation.

Meanwhile if you have something specific to say about my experiments
in translation, please do it by all means.

For example, I reconsidered my translation of naatho as 'mainstay',
and now think that 'protector' may be better. Isn't it great that we can
make our errors here and not in books.
