Cheang Oo,
As to your first questions, let me attempt an answers:
The passage you mentioned is from the Mahaa Maalu.nkyaputta Sutta (M no. 64). Here,
pan'esaaha.m has a v.l. (varia lectiones = variant reading) as tes'aaha.m. These are
examples of sandhi (euphonic combination). Let me analyse them:
pan'esaaha.m = pana esa aha.m:
pana = indeed
esa = this (masc. sg.) from etad
aha.m = I
tes'aaha.m = tesa.m aham (better reading):
tesa.m = their
aha.m = I
TRANSLATION:
I.B. Horner (Middle Length Sayings):
"As to this, I, Aananda, say that there is a difference in their faculties." (M:B
2:107)
~Naa.namoli/Bodhi (The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha):
"The difference here, Aananda, is in their faculties, I say." (M:NB 541)
Bodhi, elaborating on the Comy (=Commentary), gives a very important note (659):
"Among these who proceed by way of serenity (samatha), one bhikkhu emphasises
unification of mind -- he is said to gain deliverance of mind; another emphasizes
wisdom (pa~n~naa) -- he is said to gain deliverance by wisdom. Among those who
proceed by way of insight (vipassanaa), one emphasizes wisdom -- he is said to gain
deliverance by wisdom; another emphasizes unification of mind -- he is said to gain
deliverance of mind. The two chief disciples [Saariputta and Moggallaana] attained
arahatship by emphasizing both serenity and insight, but Ven. Saariputta became one
who gain deliverance by wisdom and Ven. Mahaa Moggallaana became one who gained
deliverance of mind. Thus the reason (for the different designations) is the
difference in their faculties, i.e., between the predominance of the concentration
faculty (samaadhi indriya) and of the wisdom faculty (pa~n~naa indriya)." [I have
inserted the Pali terms.]
This notes should be read in connection with what I have earlier answered regarding
the question on vipassanaa.
Sukhii.
