Of interest. The gestural components add a
sense of wonderment. Could be that gestures predated verbal
language. Ann MacLarnon of the
Roehampton Institute in Britain has studied the spinal column of H.
erectus, and concludes that it probably had none of the fine control of the
diaphragm that we need to propel air into the larynx in complex bursts as
we speak. An absence of language, or at least its simplicity and lack of
use in technical matters, might explain the very slow rate of change in the
stone tool technology.
