My maternal parents were even more barren than my paternal ones.
My maternal grandfather had only one sister, that married a man from
Milan and had only one offspring (whose cremation I recently
presented). My mother is my grandfather's only daughter.
Is it so incredible? I cannot believe it. 
Where are you from, Gerry? Probably you are from the US. In US there
is a plenty of fertile families. Here in Europe things are a little
bit different, especially in Italy, in France and in Spain, countries
dramatically threatened by demographic collapse. If a man in Northern
Italy has more than two children, he's suspected to belong to a
biblical sect such as Jehova's Witness or to the detested Opus Dei.
Statistical data tell us that Sweden is much more fertile than
Southern Italy. Almost the only ones having many offspring in Europe
are non-assimilated muslims. France will probably become an Islamic
republic within few decades (years?). In Italy fear of the future is
in the air, I can swear it!
