This makes sense archaeologically.

We have a Kebaran culture spreading from the Sinai to Northern Syria,
Southern Anatolia and the Jezira, and then a Zarzian culture
spreading from the Jezira to the Caucasas and eastward to the Caspian
Gates. The splitting into separate language groups over this period
makes sense.
