It's a Greenbergian term for all aboriginal languages of North and
South America that are neither NaDene nor EskimoAleut. Amerindian
languages are thought to have traversed the Bering Strait first,
followed by NaDene, and then more recently EskimoAleut.

Of course, it is also a term for New World aboriginals, even
in French (les amerindiens)
