86. kafli - Af Bolla
Chapter 86 – Of Bolli

Bolli and his travelling-companions came to Möðruvellir to Guðmundr the Powerful. He walks towards them with all friendship and was the gladdest (ie as glad as could be, as pleased as Punch).

Þar sátu þeir hálfan mánuð í góðum fagnaði.
There they stayed (lit: sat) a half month in good hospitality.

Then Guðmundr spoke to Bolli: „What is underlying (things) (what is the reason/basis for the situation,cf hafa e-t-til e-s, Z14) concerning that, has discord occurred between you, Þorsteinn (and yourself)?“

Bolli declared little underlay (ie little basis for the situation, see hafa e-t til e-s, Z14) concering that and took another subject-for-conversation (ie changed the subject).

Guðmundur mælti: "Hverja leið ætlar þú aftur að ríða?"
Guðmundr spoke: „By what way do you intend to ride back?“

"Hina sömu," svarar Bolli.
“The same,” answers Bolli.

Guðmundur mælti: "Letja vil eg yður þess því að mér er svo sagt að þið Þorsteinn hafið skilið fálega.
Guðmundr spoke: “I want to dissuade you from this because so it is said to me (ie I have heard such) that you-two, Þorsteinn (and you) have parted coldly.

Be (stay) rather here with me and ride south in (the) spring (vár) and let (us) cause then this matter to come to an end (be decided, see vegr, Z2).”

Bolli lést eigi mundu bregða ferðinni fyrir hót þeirra "en það hugði eg þá er Helgi fólið lét sem heimsklegast og mælti hvert óorðan að öðru við oss
Bolli declared-of-himself (latest, Z13) (that he) would not change (bregða, Z3) the-journey for (ie because of) their threats. “but (and) I intended that (#), when Helgi the-fool behaved (láta, Z7) as foolishly (as possible) and spoke each foul-speech (one) after another (MnI dat neut of annarr) (see at, Z.iii.4) against us

og vildi hafa spjótið konungsnaut úr hendi mér fyrir einn heyvöndul að eg skyldi freista að hann fengi ömbun orða sinna.
and wanted to have the spear King’s-Gift out-of my hand for one wisp-of-hay, (#) that I should make trial (so) that he should-get reward (pay-back) for his words.

Hefi eg og annað ætlað fyrir spjótinu að eg mundi heldur gefa þér og þar með gullhringinn þann er stólkonungurinn gaf mér.
I have also intended other (ie something else) for the-spear, that I would rather give (it) to you and there-with (ie along with it) that (the) gold-(arm)-ring which the stool-king (enthroned-king) gave me.

Hygg eg nú að gripirnir séu betur niður komnir en þá að Helgi hefði þá."
I think now that the-treasures would-be better come done (passed down , passed on) than then that (ie if) Helgi had them.”

Guðmundr thanked him for these gifts and spoke: “Here smaller gifts will come in return than (en) is deserved.”

Guðmundr gave Bolli a gold-laced shield and gold-(arm)-ring and cloak. In it was the most-expensive cloth (fabric) and all (things) fitted (adorned) there which seemed to improve (boeta) (it)

Þá mælti Guðmundur: "Illa þykir mér þú gera Bolli er þú vilt ríða um Svarfaðardal."
Then spoke Guðmundr: “(It) seems to me you do badly, Bolli, when you want to ride across Svarfaðardalr.”

Bolli segir það ekki skaða munu. Riðu þeir í brott og skilja þeir Guðmundur við hinum mestum kærleikum. Þeir Bolli ríða nú veg sinn út um Galmarströnd.
Bolli says that will not do-harm. They rode away and they, Guðmundr (and Bolli) part on the most friendly-terms. They, Bolli (and co) ride on their way out across Galmarströnd.

During the-evening they came to that farm which is-called (at) Krossar (Crosses). There lived that person (man) who was-called Óttar. He stood outside. He was bald-headed and in a skin-cloak.

Óttar greeted them well and bade them to be (stay) there. They accept (present tense) that. Good hospitality was there and (the) farmer the most-cheerful. They were (stayed) there during the-night.
