Grímur mælti: "Nú hefir öðruvís orðið en þú mundir ætlað hafa því að nú mun þitt líf vera á mínu valdi."
Grimr said: "Now (it) has otherwise come to pass than you would have intended because now your life is in my power." (Your plans didn't turn out the way you thought they would, and now your life is in my hands.)
Þorkell kvaðst ekki mundu sér friðar biðja "því að mér hefir ógiftulega tekist."
Thorkell said for himself (that he) would not ask peace for himself "because (you) have unluckily caught me." (you didn't beat me in a fair fight)
Grímur sagði ærin sín óhöpp þótt þetta liði undan: "Mun þér annarra forlaga auðið verða en deyja á okkrum fundi og vil eg þér líf gefa en þú launa því sem þú vilt."
Grimr said his ill-luck (was) sufficient although this passed by: "It will to you otherwise destiny to fall to your lot than die (It's not in the cards for you to die) at our fight, and I will give you life, and/but you pay it back as you would." (Z. líða 6 - líða undan, to slip off, pass by)
Standa þeir nú upp báðir og ganga heim til skálans.
They now both stand up and go home to the hut.
Þorkell sér að Grím mæðir blóðrás, tekur þá Sköfnungsstein og ríður og bindur við hönd Gríms og tók þegar allan sviða og þrota úr sárinu.
Thorkell sees that bleeding made Grimr weary, then takes Shin-bone's-stone and rubs and binds Grim's hand and took away at once all the smart from burning and swelling out of the wound.
Þeir voru þar um nóttina.
They stayed there during the night.
Um morguninn býst Þorkell í brott og spyr ef Grímur vilji fara með honum.
During the morning, Thorkell gets ready (to go) away and asks if Grimr wanted to go with him.
Hann kveðst það að vísu vilja.
He said for himself that (he) certainly wanted that.
Þorkell snýr þegar vestur og kemur ekki á fund Eiðs, léttir ekki fyrr en hann kemur í Sælingsdalstungu.
Thorkell turns at once towards the west and doesn't come to meet Eid, doesn't stop before he comes to Sælingsdalstungu.
Snorri goði fagnar honum með mikilli blíðu.
Chieftain Snorri receives him with much friendliness.
Þorkell sagði honum að ferð sjá hafði illa tekist.
Thorkell told him that the journey had come off poorly.
Snorri kvað hafa vel orðið.
Snorri said (it) has well come to pass.
"Líst mér giftusamlega á Grím.
"It seems to me luckily to Grim.
Vil eg og," segir hann, "að þú leysir hann vel af hendi.
I want also," he says, "that you do him well. (Z. leysa 6 - leysa af hendi, to perform, do)
Væri það nú mitt ráð vinur að þú létir af ferðum og fengir þér staðfestu og ráðakost og gerist höfðingi sem þú átt kyn til."
That would have been (i.e., past subjunctive) now my advice, friend, that you cease travelling and you get a fixed abode and way-of-life and become a leader as you have kin for."
Þorkell svarar: "Oft hafa mér vel gefist yður ráð" og spurði ef hann hefði um hugsað hverrar konu hann skyldi biðja.
Thorkell answers: "You advice has often proven good to me" and asked if he had (past subjunctive) thought about which woman he should ask. (Z. gefa 8 - gefast vel (illa), to prove good (bad))
Snorri svarar: "Þeirrar skaltu konu biðja er bestur kostur er en það er Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir."
Snorri answers: "You shall ask the one who is a best choice, and that is Gudrun, Osvifr's daughter."
Þorkell kvað það satt vera að ráðahagurinn var virðulegur "en mikið þykir mér á liggja ofstæki hennar," segir hann, "og stórræði.
Thorkell said that truly to be the marriage was worthy "and it seems to me her vehemence oppresses much. (Z. liggja 8 - liggja á e-m, to lie heavy on, weigh upon, oppress)
Hún mun vilja hefna láta Bolla bónda síns.
She will want to cause to avenge her husband Bolli.
Þar þykist í ráðum vera með henni Þorgils Hölluson og má vera að honum sé eigi allur getnaður að þessu.
It was thought there in marriage to be with her Thorgil Holluson, and can be to him would not be all a pregnancy with this.
En vel er mér Guðrún að skapi."
But Gudrun is fine to my thinking." (Z. skap 2 - vera e-m (vel) at skapi, vera nær skapi e-s, to be to one's mind)
Snorri mælti: "Eg mun í því bindast að þér mun ekki mein verða að Þorgísli en meiri von þykir mér að nokkur umskipti séu orðin um hefndina Bolla áður þessi misseri séu liðin."
Snorri said: "I will engage in that that you will not become harm to Thorgisli and it seems greater hope to me that some change would be become concerning the revenge for Bolli before this season would be ended."
