Síðan var aflað til leiks og beitist Hallur fyrir.
Then (everyone) was gathered for the games and Hall led (not "lead"!) the cause (was the organizer).

Hann bað Kjartan til leiks: "Vildum vér frændi að þú sýndir kurteisi þína í þessu."
He invited Kjartan to play (Old Icelandic has a noun here, but the very sounded better to me) "We would want, kinsman, that you show your courtesy in this."

Kjartan svarar: "Lítt hefi eg tamið mig til leika nú hið næsta því að annað var tíðara með Ólafi konungi.
Kjartan answers: "I have little trained for the game now next because second (I) was earlier with King Olaf.

En eigi vil eg synja þér um sinnsakir þessa."
But I will not refuse you this one time. (Z. sinn - um sinns sakir, for this once (eigi vil ek synja þér um sinns sakir þessa))

Býst nú Kjartan til leiks.
Kjartan now got ready for the game.

Var þeim mönnum að móti honum skipt er þar voru sterkastir.
The men were divided against him those who were strongest.

Er nú leikið um daginn.
(The game) is now played during the day.

Hafði þar engi maður við Kjartani, hvorki afl né fimleik.
There was no match for Kjartan, neither (in) physical strength nor agility. (Z. hafa 14 - h. við e-m, to be a match for one)

Og um kveldið er leik var lokið þá stendur upp Hallur Guðmundarson og mælti: "Það er boð föður míns og vilji um alla þá menn er hingað hafa lengst sótt að þeir séu hér allir náttlangt og taki hér á morgun til skemmtanar."
And in the evening when (the) game was ended, then Hall Gudmundarson stood up and said: "That is a banquet at my father's and (I) wanted all the men who here have long visited that they stay here all night long and tomorrow take to (i.e., have) some fun here.

Þetta erindi ræmdist vel og þótti stórmannlega boðið.

Kálfur Ásgeirsson var þar kominn og var einkar kært með þeim Kjartani.

Þar var og Hrefna systir hans og hélt allmjög til skarts.

Var þar aukið hundrað manna á búi um nóttina.
