Those brothers, Helgi and Vakr, took for themselves passage (in a ship) during the summer in Kollafjörðr and both went abroad (from Iceland).

Þeir tóku Noreg og fóru til hirðar Haralds konungs hins hárfagra.
They reached (and took harbour in) Norway and went to (the) court of King Haraldr’s fair-haired.

Voru þeir með konungi um veturinn og þokkuðust hverjum manni vel.
They were (stayed) with (the) king during the-winter and were-well-liked by each man (person) (note: dat. Sg).

Þeir sögðu konungi frá skiptum þeirra Búa. Lét konungur illa yfir því er Búi

Chapter 12.

Nú er að segja frá Búa. Þeim byrjaði seint og tóku Orkneyjar um haustið síðarla.
Now (one) is to tell about Búi. (It) blew slowly for them (ie they got very light winds) and reached (the) Orkneys (Seal-Islands) late in the autumn.

Þá réð eyjunum Einar jarl Rögnvaldsson. Búi fór til hirðar jarls og

gekk fyrir hann og kvaddi hann. Jarl spurði hver hann væri.
walked before him and greeted (kveðja, Z2) him. (The) earl asked who he was.

Búi sagði af hið ljósasta "og vildi eg þiggja veturvist með yður herra."
Búi said (rattled off? said of (it, himself), I´m not sure what “af” is doing here) the most-plain (answer)  “and I would-want to receive a winter-stay (winter-lodging) with you, lord.”

Jarl segir: "Fylgd góð mun í þér. Skaltu víst vera með oss í vetur ef þú vilt."
(The) earl says: “Good support will (be) in you (you will be useful to us?). You shall certainly be (stay) with us this winter if you want.”

Búi var með hirð jarlsins um veturinn. Einar jarl hafði starfsamt um veturinn.
Búi was (stayed) with the-earl’s guard (security-forces) during the-winter. Earl Einar had much trouble during the winter.

Var Búi hinn öruggasti í öllum mannraunum. En um vorið er skip það*
Búi was the most-fearless in all trials-of-courage. But during the-spring when that ship*

was made-ready (to go) to Norway, *which Búi had thither (ie to the Orkneys) gone on, then Búi went before (the) earl and bade him for leave (to leave).

Jarl segir: "Hitt þykir mér ráðlegra Búi að þú dveljist með oss. Höfum vér
(The) earl says: “That (other option) seems to me more-advisable, that you remain with us. We (royal “we” or the court as a whole) have

þig að röskum manni reynt. Munum vér leiða þig í hirðlög og láta þig taka

þar með aðrar sæmdir ef þú vilt hér vera."
therewith other honours if you want to be (stay) here.”

Búi þakkaði jarli með fögrum orðum en kveðst vilja til Noregs. Jarl kvað svo vera skyldu.
Búi thanked (the) earl with fair words but declared-of-himself to want (to go) to Norway. (The) earl declared (it) should be so.

Eftir það sigldu þeir til Noregs og komu að norðarlega.
After that they sailed to Norway and came upon (approached) (it) far-to-the-north.

Spurðu þeir að Haraldur konungur sat í Þrándheimi. Fór Búi til Þrándheims á einum

Búi sagði til allt hið sanna. Konungur spurði hvar hann hefði verið um veturinn.
Búi said to (him) all the truth (hinn + adj (sannr)). (The) king asked where he had been during the-winter

Konungur mælti: "Muntu nokkuð eiga hér vel kvæmt?"
(The) king spoke: “Will-you have to-some-extent (been) fully free-to-come here (ie did you get the earl’s permission)?
