Þorgerður mælti: "Sú fyrirætlan er ei vænleg, að skipta höggum við Búa við margkunnindi Esju en harðfengi hans."
Thorgerd said: "That purpose is not hopeful, to share blows with Bua with knowing many things Esju and his valiant."

Kolfinnur segir: "Tveir eru í hættu hverri.
Kolfine says: "Two are each in danger.

Annaðhvort mun eg lifa eða deyja."
Either I will live or die."

"Þú munt ráða vilja son minn," segir hún.
"You will want advice, my son," she says.

9. kafli
Um morguninn fóru þeir frændur snemma og komu í Kollafjörð.
During the morning they, relatives, went early and came to Kollafiord.

Bjuggust menn þá til leiks.
People/men got ready then for the games.

Búi sat á palli hjá Ólöfu.
Bui said on the dais by Olaf.

Kolfinnur sneri til stofu og gekk að pallinum þar sem Búi sat og mælti: "Tveir eru þér kostir gerðir," sagði Kolfinnur, "sá annar að þú léttir komum hingað með öllu, hinn annar að þú gakk á hólm við mig á morgun í hólmi þeim er liggur suður í Leiruvogsá."
Kolfine turned to the sitting room and went to the dais there where Bui sat and said: "You make two ["eru" matches "tveir" grammatically (I think), but I don't see how it fits here] choices," said Kolfine, " the one the let come here with all, the other that you duel with me tomorrow on the islands that lie south of Leiruvogsa."

Búi segir: "Því heldur skal kjósa sem kostir eru ójafnari.

Eg hefi verið sjálfráði ferða minna hér til og svo ætla eg enn en hólmgöngu skal veita þér þegar þú vilt."
I have been free of my journeys to here and so I intend still and (I) will give you a duel as soon as you want."

Eftir það tóku þeir höndum saman og bundu þetta sín á milli.
After that they shook hands together and contracted (i.e., agreed) between themselves. (Z. milli - sín á (or í) m., between (among) themselves)

Þeir Kolfinnur og Grímur höfðu sig þegar á braut.
They, Kolfine and Grimur, kept themselves immediately away.

Fóru þeir um kveldið á Korpúlfsstaði og sögðu Korpúlfi hvar komið var.
They went during the evening to Korpulf's place and told Korpulfi how matters stood. (Z. kominn - hann sagði henni, hvar þá var komit, he told her how matters stood)

Hann segir: "Nú stefnir þú frændi ekki vænt.
He says: "You, kinsman, are now steering in a direction not promising.

Hefir þeim orðið þungt að skipta við Esju er meira áttu undir sér.
(You) have bandied heavy words with Esju who more had you in his hands. (not a match, but Z. skipta 6 - s. orðum við e-n, to bandy words with one)

En það mun nú fram verða að ganga sem ætlað er."

Þar voru þeir um nóttina.
They were there during the night.

En er þeir bjuggust mælti Korpúlfur: "Lítið lið má eg veita þér Kolfinnur," sagði hann, "en sverð er hér er eg vil gefa þér.
When they got ready Korpulfur said: "A small help I am able to give you, Kolfinnur," he said, "but a sword which is here I will give you.

Þetta bar eg öndverða daga mína.
I carried this beginning my days (meaning, "I have carried this from my early days").

En ekki mun þér það fyrir mikið koma í þetta sinn."
But it will be very much of no avail to you this time." (Z. koma 4 - k. fyrir ekki, to come to naught, be of no avail)

Eftir það fóru þeir frændur leið sína.
After that they, the relatives, went on their way.

Búi var eftir hjá leik er þeir Kolfinnur skildu.
Later, Bui was present at the games which they, Kolfinnur (and others), broke off.

Gekk hann ekki heim fyrr en að vanda.
He did not go home before preparing carefully.

Var Esja þar fyrir og heilsaði fóstra sínum og spurði hvort honum væri á hólm skorað.
Esja was there in his presence and greeted his foster relative and asked if he had challenged (someone) to a duel.

Hann kvað svo vera.
He said (it) so was.

Esja mælti: "Þar er harðfengur maður er Kolfinnur er og fjörmikill
Esja said: "There is a hardy man who is Kolfinnur and exceedingly great.

En hér verð eg nú að sofa í nótt hjá þér."
But here now I will sleep tonight beside you."

Hún gerði honum þá laug og strauk hvert bein á honum.
She made him then a bath and wiped each leg of him.

Síðan klæddi hún hann um morguninn sem henni líkaði og bað hann vel fara.
Then she dressed him in the morning as she pleased and bade him farewell.
