Þá mælti bæjarmaðurinn: "Hver er þessi maður?"
Then the townsman spoke, “Who is this man?”

Kjartan sagði nafn sitt.
Kjartan said his name.

Bæjarmaður mælti: "Þú ert sundfær vel eða ertu að öðrum íþróttum jafn vel
búinn sem að þessi?"
(The) townsman spoke, “You are a very good swimmer and are you equally adept
at other skills as this.”

Kjartan svarar og heldur seint: "Það var orð á þá er eg var á Íslandi að þar
færu aðrar eftir. En nú er lítils um þessa vert."
Kjartan answers and rather slowly, “It was (the) word then when I was in
Iceland that there others went behind (me?). But now this is worth little.”

Bæjarmaður mælti: "Það skiptir nokkuru við hvern þú hefir átt eða hví spyrð
þú mig engis?"
(The) townsman spoke, “It matters some with whom you have had (a contest?)
or why do you not ask me anything?”

Kjartan mælti: "Ekki hirði eg um nafn þitt."
Kjartan spoke, “I don’t care about your name.”

Bæjarmaður segir: "Bæði er að þú ert gervilegur maður enda lætur þú
allstórlega. En eigi því
(The) townsman says, “You are both an accomplished man and behave very
haughtily. But none the less

síður skaltu vita nafn mitt eða við hvern þú hefir sundið þreytt. Hér er
Ólafur konungur
you shall know my name or with whom you have contended at swimming. Here is
King Olaf

Tryggvason."

Kjartan svarar engu og snýr þegar í brott skikkjulaus. Hann var í
skarlatskyrtli rauðum.
Kjartan does not reply and turns away at once, coatless. He was in a red
scarlet-kyrtle.

Konungur var þá mjög klæddur. Hann kallar á Kjartan og bað hann eigi svo
skjótt fara. Kjartan
