Þá mælti bæjarmaðurinn: "Hver er þessi maður?"
Then the townsman said: "Who is this man?"
Kjartan sagði nafn sitt.
Kjartan said his name.
Bæjarmaður mælti: "Þú ert sundfær vel eða ertu að öðrum íþróttum jafn vel búinn sem að þessi?"
(The) townsman said: "You are able to swim well, but are you equally prepared at other sports as with this?"
Kjartan answers also rather slowly: "That was a message to them that I was at Iceland to there would go back again.
En nú er lítils um þessa vert."
But now this is of little worth."
Bæjarmaður mælti: "Það skiptir nokkuru við hvern þú hefir átt eða hví spyrð þú mig engis?"
The townsman said: "That is of some importance with what you have owned or why you asked me nothing?"
Kjartan mælti: "Ekki hirði eg um nafn þitt."
Kjartan said: "I did not care about your name." (Z. hirða - h. eigi um e-t, not to care about)
Bæjarmaður segir: "Bæði er að þú ert gervilegur maður enda lætur þú allstórlega.
The townsman says: "You are both an accomplished man and also you behave very haughtily.
En eigi því síður skaltu vita nafn mitt eða við hvern þú hefir sundið þreytt.
But not that less will you know my name or with whom you have contended with swimming.
Hér er Ólafur konungur Tryggvason."
Here is King Olaf, son of Tryggva."
Kjartan svarar engu og snýr þegar í brott skikkjulaus.
Kjartan answers nothing and turns at once away cloakless.
Hann var í skarlatskyrtli rauðum.
He was in a red scarlet kirtle.
Konungur var þá mjög klæddur.
The king was then very-much dressed.
Hann kallar á Kjartan og bað hann eigi svo skjótt fara.
He calls to Kjartan and asks him not to quickly go.
Kjartan víkur aftur og heldur seint.
Kjartan turns back (or assents) and rather slowly.
The king then takes off his shoulders a good cloak and gives to Kjartan, he said (Kjartan) should not go cloakless to his men.
Kjartan thanks the king for the gifts and goes to his men and shows them the cloak.
Ekki létu hans menn vel yfir þessu, þótti Kjartan mjög hafa gengið á konungs vald.
His men did not express approval of this, (they) thought Kjartan has very-much submitted to the king.
Og er nú kyrrt.
And now it is quiet.
Veðráttu gerði harða um haustið.
The weather became severe during the fall.
Voru frost mikil og kuldar.
(There) was much frost and cold.
Heiðnir menn segja það eigi undarlegt að veðrátta léti illa: "Geldur að nýbreytni konungs og þessa hins nýja siðar er goðin hafa reiðst."
(The) pagan men said that (it was) not wonderful that the weather misbehaved: "It is a punishment for the King's innovations (i.e., new faith) and this the new faith that the heathen-priest has become angry (about). (Z. gjalda - geldr at nýbreytni (gen.) konungs, it is a punishment for the king's innovations.)
Íslendingar voru allir saman um veturinn í bænum.
(The) Icelanders were all together in the village during the winter.
Var Kjartan mjög fyrir þeim.
Kjartan very much led them. (Kjartan was very much in charge.)
The weather improves and many people came then to the village on the summons of King Olaf.
Margir menn höfðu við kristni tekið í Þrándheimi en hinir voru þó miklu fleiri er í móti voru.
Many people had accepted Christianity in Trondheim but the others were nevertheless many more who were against (it).
Einnhvern dag átti konungur þing í bænum út á Eyrum og talaði trú fyrir mönnum, langt erindi og snjallt.
One day the King had an assembly in the village out at Eyrum and preached the gospel to people, a long and eloquent message.
Þrændir höfðu her manns og buðu konungi bardaga í mót.
The Thronds had a people's army and proclaimed to the king a fight against.
Konungur kvað þá vita skyldu að hann þóttist átt hafa við meira ofurefli en berjast þar við þorpara í Þrándheimi.
The king told them (they they) should know that he thought a family is a match more superior strength than to fight there against (the) villages in Trondheim.
The villagers were panic-stricken and placed everything in the king's power and many people were then cleansed from guilt.
En síðan var slitið þinginu.
And then the assembly was ended.
