Þá mælti Kotkell: "Það horfir þó nokkuð annan veg við um sakir við Guðrúnu og bræður hennar en þér hefir sagt verið.
Then Kotkell said: "That nevertheless looks a somewhat other way with concerning on account of Gudrun and her brothers than you have said. (how does "verið" fit here? "have been said"?)

Hafa menn ausið hrópi á oss fyrir enga sök og þigg stóðhrossin fyrir þessar sakir.
Men have poured slander on us over no offense and receive the stud horse for these reasons.

Ganga og þær einar sögur frá þér að vér munum eigi uppi orpin fyrir sveitarmönnum hér ef vér höfum þitt traust."
They, singular tales, are also current about you that we will not (be) at the mercy of the men of the community here of we have your support. (Z. verps 5 - uppi orpinn fyrir e-m, quite overwhelmed, at one's mercy )

Þorleikur slæst nú í málinu og þóttu honum fögur hrossin en Kotkell flutti kænlega málið.
Thorleik referred now the matter and thought the horse fine but Kotkell moved slickly (?) the matter.

Þá tók Þorleikur við hrossunum.
Thorleik then received the horses.

Hann fékk þeim bústað á Leiðólfsstöðum í Laxárdal.
He permitted them residence at Leidolfstads in Laxardal (Salmon-river-valley).

Hann birgði þau og um búfé.
He furnished them also with regard to livestock.

Þetta spyrja Laugamenn og vilja synir Ósvífurs þegar gera til þeirra Kotkels og sona hans.
The people of Lauga hear of this and want Osvif's sons at once make preparations for them, Kotkel and his sons.

Ósvífur mælti: "Höfum vér nú ráð Snorra goða og spörum þetta verk öðrum því að skammt mun líða áður búar Kotkels munu eiga spánnýjar sakir við þá og mun sem vert er Þorleiki mest mein að þeim.
Osvig said: "We have now (the) consent of Snorra the good and we save these other works so that shortly Kotkel's neighbors will already go will have brand new on account of they also will as worthy as Thorleik much harm to them,

Munu þeir margir hans óvinir af stundu er hann hefir áður haft stundan af.
They, many of his enemies, will soon be he has previously had been intent on.

En eigi mun eg letja yður að gera slíkt mein þeim Kotkatli sem yður líkar ef eigi verða aðrir til að elta þau úr héraði eða taka af lífi með öllu um það er þrír vetur eru liðnir."
And I will not dissuade you from doing such harm to the Kotkals as you please if doesn't come to pass others until chase them out of the district or put an end to (their) live with all concerning that which three years have suffered.

Guðrún og bræður hennar sögðu svo vera skyldu.
Gudrun and her brothers said it would be so.

Ekki unnust þau Kotkell mjög fyrir en hvorki þurftu þau um veturinn að kaupa hey né mat og var sú byggð óvinsæl.
Kotkell (and company) did little to support themselves and they neither needed to buy hay during the winter nor food and they were unpopular in the region. (Z. vinna 13 - ekki unnust þau mjök fyrir, they did little to support themselves )

Eigi treystust menn að raska kosti þeirra fyrir Þorleiki.
Men didn't dare to violate their agreement in front of Thorleik.

37. kafli
Það var eitt sumar á þingi er Þorleikur sat í búð sinni að maður einn mikill gekk í búðina inn.
It was one summer at the Thing when Thorleik sat in his booth that a large man alone went in to the booth.

Sá kvaddi Þorleik en hann tók kveðju þessa manns og spurði hver hann væri eða hvað hann héti.
Thorleik greeted him and he received this man's greeting and asked who he was and what he was named.

Hann kvaðst Eldgrímur heita og búa í Borgarfirði á þeim bæ er heita Eldgrímsstaðir en sá bær er í dal þeim er skerst vestur í fjöll milli Múla og Grísartungu.
He stated for himself his name was Eldgrim and (he) lived in Borgarfirth at the farms which are named Eldgrimstad, and the farm is in the valleys that cut westwards in the mountain between Mula and Grisartongue.

Sá er nú kallaður Grímsdalur.
That is now called Grimsdale.

Þorleikur segir: "Heyrt hefi eg þín getið að því að þú sért ekki lítilmenni."
Thorleik says: "I have heard you spoken of (?) because you are not one of low condition."

Eldgrímur mælti: "Það er erindi mitt hingað að eg vil kaupa að þér stóðhrossin þau hin dýru er Kotkell gaf þér í fyrra sumar."
Eldgrim said: "That is my errand here that I will buy your stud horse, they the more expensive than Kotkell gave you the summer before."
