Ólafur fór utan um sumarið og kemur skipi sínu við Hörðaland. Þar bjó sá
maður skammt á land
Olaf sailed abroad during the summer and brings his ship into Hordaland.
There, a short way up on land, lived that man
upp er hét Geirmundur gnýr, ríkur maður og auðigur og víkingur mikill.
Ódældarmaður var
who was called Geirmund din, a powerful man and wealthy and a great harrier.
He was an overbearing man
hann og hafði nú sest um kyrrt og var hirðmaður Hákonar jarls hins ríka.
Geirmundur fer til skips
and had now remained quiet (settled down) and was a retainer of Earl Hakon
the powerful. Geirmund goes to (the) ship
og kannast brátt við Ólaf því að hann hafði heyrt hans getið. Geirmundur
býður Ólafi til sín með

him. Geirmund invites Olaf to (stay) with him
svo marga menn sem hann vildi. Það þiggur Ólafur og fer til vistar með sétta
mann. Hásetar

Ólafs vistast þar um Hörðaland. Geirmundur veitir Ólafi vel. Þar var bær

En er á leið veturinn sagði Ólafur Geirmundi deili á um erindi sín, að hann

Geirmundur svarar: "Hákon jarl á besta mörk og veit eg víst ef þú kemur á
hans fund að þér mun
Geirmund answers, “Earl Hakon has the best forest and I know for certain if
you come to a meeting with him that you will
sú innan handar því að jarl fagnar vel þeim mönnum er eigi eru jafnvel
menntir sem þú Ólafur ef hann sækja heim."

Um vorið byrjar Ólafur ferð sína á fund Hákonar jarls. Tók jarl við honum
ágæta vel og bauð
During the spring, Olaf prepares for his journey to meet Earl Hakon. (The)
earl received him with high praise and invited
Ólafi með sér að vera svo lengi sem hann vildi.
Olaf to stay with him as long as he wished.
Ólafur segir jarli hversu af stóðst um ferð hans: "Vil eg þess beiða yður
herra að þér létuð oss
Olaf tells (the) earl how it stood regarding his journey, “I wish to ask
you, lord, for that that you allow us
heimila mörk yðra að höggva húsavið."
to have a right to your forest to cut house timbers.”
Jarl svarar: "Ósparað skal það þótt þú fermir skip þitt af þeim viði er vér
munum gefa þér því að
(The) earl answers, “It shall be unsparingly reckoned. You load your ship
with that wood which we will give you because
vér hyggjum að oss sæki eigi heim hversdaglega slíkir menn af Íslandi."
we think that not every day such men from Iceland visit us at home.”
En að skilnaði gaf jarl honum öxi gullrekna og var það hin mesta gersemi,
skildust síðan með hinum mesta kærleik.
And at parting (the) earl gave him a gold inlaid axe and it was the greatest
treasure, (they) parted afterwards with the greatest affection.
Geirmundur skipar jarðir sínar á laun og ætlar út til Íslands um sumarið á
skipi Ólafs. Leynt hefir
Geirmund assigns his land secretly and intends (to go) abroad to Iceland
during the summer on Olaf’s ship. He has hidden
hann þessu alla menn. Eigi vissi Ólafur fyrr en Geirmundur flutti fé sitt
til skips Ólafs og var það mikill auður.

Ólafur mælti: "Eigi mundir þú fara á mínu skipi ef eg hefði fyrr vitað því
að vera ætla eg þá

expect some of them
munu nokkura á Íslandi að betur gegndi að þig sæju aldrei. En nú er þú ert
hér kominn við svo

Geirmundur segir: "Eigi skal aftur setjast þótt þú sért heldur stórorður því
að eg ætla að fá að vera yðvar farþegi."
Geirmund says, “(I) shall not be reckoned as left behind. You are using
rather high sounding words because I expect to get to be your passenger.”
