Og er Ólafur lauk sínu máli þá var góður rómur ger og þótti þetta erindi stórum skörulegt.

And when Olaf ended his talk then (there) was good applause and this message was thought very bold.

 

Og er Ólafur kom heim til búðar sagði hann bræðrum sínum þessa tilætlan.

And when Olaf came home to (the) booth, he told his brothers this intention.

 

Þeim fannst fátt um og þótti ærið mikið við haft.

They were little pleased concerning (this) and thought it sufficient made a great display.  (???)  (Z. hafa 14 - h. mikit (lítit) við, to make a great (little) display)

 

Eftir þingið ríða þeir bræður heim.

After the Thing, they, the brothers, ride home.

 

Líður nú sumarið.

The summer now passes.

 

Búast þeir bræður við veislunni.

The brothers prepare the feast.

 

Leggur Ólafur til óhneppilega að þriðjungi og er veislan búin með hinum bestu föngum.

 Olaf contributes un-scarcely (i.e., generously) at a third and the feast is prepared with the best means.  (Z. leggja 14 - l. e-t til, to furnish, contribute, as one's share)

 

Var mikið til aflað þessar veislu því að það var ætlað að fjölmennt mundi koma.

This feast was procured greatly(?) because it was intended that many-people would come.

 

Og er að veislu kemur er það sagt að flestir virðingamenn koma þeir sem heitið höfðu.

And when (they) come to the feast it is said that most men/people of distinction came, they who were called.

 

Var það svo mikið fjölmenni að það er sögn manna flestra að eigi skyrti níu hundruð.

It was so well attended to that is report(ed) my many people that it wasn't short of 900.

 

Þessi hefir önnur veisla fjölmennust verið á Íslandi en sú önnur er Hjaltasynir gerðu erfi eftir föður sinn.

This has(?) another feast been well attended in Iceland and the other which Hjalt's sons did honor with a funeral feast in memory of their father.

 

Þar voru tólf hundruð.

Twelve hundred were there.

 

Þessi veisla var hin skörulegsta að öllu og fengu þeir bræður mikinn sóma og var Ólafur mest fyrirmaður.

This feast was the most magnificent of all and the brothers got much honor and Olaf was most a person who excels others.

 

Ólafur gekk til móts við báða bræður sína um fégjafir.

Olaf went to meet with both his brothers concerning gifts-of-value(?).

 

Var og gefið öllum virðingamönnum.

Also were given (gifts) to all men of distinction.

 

Og er flestir menn voru í brottu farnir þá víkur Ólafur til máls við Þorleik bróður sinn og mælti: "Svo er frændi sem þér er kunnigt að með okkur hefir verið ekki margt.

And when most people had gone way, then Olaf broached (the subject) with his brother Thorleik and said: "So (it) is kinsman as (to) you is known that with us has been not much.  (Z.  víkja  1 - v. til við e-n, to broach it to one)

 

Nú vildi eg til þess mæla að við betruðum frændsemi okkra.

Now I wanted to talk about that, that we better our kinship.

 

Veit eg að þér mislíkar er eg tók við gripum þeim er faðir minn gaf mér á deyjanda degi.

I know that you dislike that I received the property which my father gave me on his dying day (i.e., on his deathbed).

 

Nú ef þú þykist af þessu vanhaldinn þá vil eg það vinna til heils hugar þíns að fóstra son þinn og er sá kallaður æ minni maður er öðrum fóstrar barn."

Now if it seems to you of this getting-less-than-you-were-due then I will be ready to heal your heart to foster your son, and the one named is less a man who fosters another's child.

 

 

Þorleikur tekur þessu vel og sagði sem satt er að þetta er sæmilega boðið.

Thorleik received this well and said as truth is that this is the honorable offer.

 

Tekur nú Ólafur við Bolla syni Þorleiks.

Olaf now received Bolla, Thorleik's son.

 

Þá var hann þrevetur.

He was then three years old.

 

Skiljast þeir nú með hinum mesta kærleik og fer Bolli heim í Hjarðarholt með Ólafi.

They now part with the greatest affection and Bolli goes home to Hjardarhold with Olaf.

 

Þorgerður tekur vel við honum.

Thorgerd received him well.

 

Fæðist Bolli þar upp og unnu þau honum eigi minna en sínum börnum.

Bolli was brought up there, and they loved him not less than their children.

Af Ólafi og Þorgerði

Ólafur og Þorgerður áttu son.

Olaf and Thorgerd had a son.

 

Sá sveinn var vatni ausinn og nafn gefið.

The boy was sprinkled with water and a name (was) given.

 

Lét Ólafur kalla hann Kjartan eftir Mýrkjartani móðurföður sínum.

Olaf had him named Kjartan in honor of Myrkjartan, his maternal grandfather.

 

Þeir Bolli og Kjartan voru mjög jafngamlir.

They, Bolli and Kjartan were very-much the same age(?).

 

Enn áttu þau fleiri börn.

Yet, they had several children.

 

Son þeirra hét Steinþór og Halldór, Helgi, og Höskuldur hét hinn yngsti son Ólafs.

Their son was named Steinthor, also Halldor, Helgi, and Hoskuld was the name of Olaf's youngest son.  [Do I understand this correctly that both instances of "son" are in the singular?]

 

Bergþóra hét dóttir þeirra Ólafs og Þorgerðar, og Þorbjörg.

Bergthora was the name of their, Olaf and Thorgerd's, daughter, also Thorbjorg.

 

Öll voru börn þeirra mannvæn er þau óxu upp.

All their children were promising when they grew up.
