I think that 'seeks a meeting' has the wrong flavor. I'm
more or less with Rob on this: 'goes to visit' would be my
choice.

The sense of the last bit is actually clearer if you
translate it literally: 'They invited him to [stay with]
them and laid many words thereto'. In other words, it
wasn't a pro forma invitation: they laid it on pretty thick.
Let's see what M&P have ... 'urged him effusively'.
