Síðan lætur konungur fá þeim hesta til reiðar en hann setur menn til að búa um skip þeirra og annast varnað þann er þeir áttu.

Then (the) king lets them take horses to ride and he appoints men to make ready their ship and provides for that keeping that they had.

 

Konungur reið þá til Dyflinnar og þykja mönnum þetta mikil tíðindi er þar var dótturson konungs í för með honum, þeirrar er þaðan var fyrir löngu hertekin fimmtán vetra gömul.

But nevertheless Melkorka's foster-female-relation wondered most at this news, who then lay bedridden and both suffering and old-age attacked (her).

 

En þó gekk hún þá staflaust á fund Ólafs.

But nevertheless she then walked without a stick to meet Olaf.

 

Þá mælti konungur til Ólafs: "Hér er nú komin fóstra Melkorku og mun hún vilja hafa tíðindasögn af þér um hennar hag."

Then (the) king spoke to Olaf: "Here is now come Melkorka's foster-female-relation and she will want to have a-report-of-tidings from you concerning her state."

 

Ólafur tók við henni báðum höndum og setti kerlingu á kné sér og sagði að fóstra hennar sat í góðum kostum á Íslandi.

Olaf took her with both hands and placed (the) old-woman on his knees and said that her foster-female-relation sat in good condition in Iceland.  

 

Þá seldi Ólafur henni hnífinn og beltið og kenndi kerling gripina og varð grátfegin, kvað það bæði vera að sonur Melkorku var skörulegur "enda á hann til þess varið."

Then Olaf delivered the knife and the belt to her and assigned (i.e., gave) (the) old-woman the property and (she) was weeping for joy, stated that, that both to be Melkorka's son was magnificent "and indeed it is his nature."  (Z. verja (2^nd entry) 5 - þú átt til þess varit, it is thy nature)

 

Var kerling hress þann vetur allan.

(The) old-woman was in-good-spirits all winter.

 

Konungur var lítt í kyrrsæti því að þá var jafnan herskátt um Vesturlöndin.

(The) king was little sitting-at-rest because then was always in-a-state-of-war around the West-Lands.

 

Rak konungur af sér þann vetur víkinga og úthlaupsmenn.

(The) king drove away (does this form of the verb also include the idea of "was driving away"?) from him that winter vikings and raiders. 

 

Var Ólafur með sveit sína á konungsskipi og þótti sú sveit heldur úrig viðskiptis þeim er í móti voru.

Olaf was with his body-of-men on (the) king's-ship and it seemed to the crew rather vicious dealings that were against them. 

 

Konungur hafði þá tal við Ólaf og hans félaga og alla ráðagerð því að honum reyndist Ólafur bæði vitur og framgjarn í öllum mannraunum.

(The) king had then talked with (literally, had a talk with) Olaf and his comrades and all plans because Olaf proved to be both wise and eager in all perils.

 

En að áliðnum vetri stefndi konungur þing og varð allfjölmennt.

And at consideration winter (the) king summoned a Thing and (it) was attended-in-great-numbers.

 

Konungur stóð upp og talaði.

(The) king stood up and spoke.

 

Hann hóf svo mál sitt: "Það er yður kunnigt að hér kom sá maður í fyrra haust er dótturson minn er en þó stórættaður í föðurkyn.

He began his speech thus: "That is known to-you that (to) here came such a man before this autumn who is my grandson who and yet high-born in-regard-to (his) father's-kin. (Z. hefja 3 - h. mál sitt, to begin one's speech)

 

Virðist mér Ólafur svo mikill atgervimaður og skörungur að vér eigum eigi slíkra manna hér kost.

It seemed to-me Olaf so large a man of great (physical) accomplishments and a noble-man that we don't have such an alternative man here.

 

Nú vil eg bjóða honum konungdóm eftir minn dag því að Ólafur er betur til yfirmanns fallinn en mínir synir."

Now I will offer him (my) kingdom after my day (i.e., my time on this earth) because Olaf is better as a worthy master.
