Not so much just empty as emptied, deserted, abandoned, let
go to waste. Because <eyddur> is the past participle of the
verb <eyða>, there's some emphasis on the process as well as
on the result.

This makes it sound as if everyone went to a single big
meeting with him, but no such implication is actually
present; the idea is 'went to meet with, to talk to, to
visit'. (This possibility is covered at Z. s.v. <fundr>
(2).)
