Like many people, I started with E.V. Gordon, An Introduction
to Old Norse; it's a fine book, but I suspect that it's pretty
hard to get into if one hasn't already got some knowledge of
linguistics. Nowadays there's Michael Barnes, A New Introduction
to Old Norse, published by the Viking Society for Northern
Research; it's a better starting point. There is also an on-line
course at <http://www.utexas.edu/cola/centers/lrc/eieol/norol-0-X.html>,
and of course there are the beginning lessons in the Files section
of this group.
