Þá mælti Höskuldur: "Svo hefir nú til tekist að þetta mun verða kaup okkar.

Then Hoskuld speaks, "So has (it?) now been done that this will be our
bargain. You take

this money for yourself and I will take this woman along. I say that you
have behaved (haft?) generously in this instance

Síðan gekk Höskuldur heim til búðar sinnar. Það sama kveld rekkti Höskuldur

Afterwards Hoskuld went home to his booth. That same evening Hoskuld slept
with her.

It was (the) talk of every one that good clothing was arranged for her.

En er höfðingjar höfðu þar mælt þeim málum sem þá stóðu lög til var slitið
fundi þessum.

And when the chieftains had stated their cases there as (the) law then
stood, this meeting was dissolved.

Síðan gekk Höskuldur á fund Hákonar konungs og kvaddi hann virðulega sem
skaplegt var.

Afterwards Hoskuld went to a meeting with King Hakon and greeted him
worthily as was suitable.

Konungur sá við honum og mælti: "Tekið mundum vér hafa kveðju þinni
Höskuldur þótt

(The) King looked at him and spoke, "We will accept to have your greeting,
Hoskuld, although

þú hefðir nokkuru fyrr oss fagnað og svo skal enn vera."

you (could) have greeted us somewhat earlier and so shall it still be."


13. kafli - Útkoma Höskuldar

Eftir þetta tók konungur með allri blíðu Höskuldi og bað hann ganga á sitt
skip "og ver

After that (the) king received Hoskluld with all friendliness and invited
him to go on his ship "and stay

með oss meðan þú vilt í Noregi vera."

with us while you will be in Norway."

Höskuldur svarar: "Hafið þökk fyrir boð yðvart en nú á eg þetta sumar margt
að starfa.

Hoskuld answers, "(You) have (my) thanks for your invitation but now I have
this summer much to do.

Hefir það mjög til haldið er eg hefi svo lengi dvalið að sækja yðvarn fund
að eg ætlaði að afla mér húsaviðar."

It has held (me up) much when I have delayed so long to seek a meeting with
you that I intended to procure myself (some) house timbers.

Konungur bað hann halda skipinu til Víkurinnar. Höskuldur dvaldist með
konungi um

(The) King bade him steer the ship to the Oslo bay. Hoskuld remained with
the king for some time.

hríð. Konungur fékk honum húsavið og lét ferma skipið.

(The) King gave him house timbers and had him load the ship.

Þá mælti konungur til Höskulds: "Eigi skal dvelja þig hér með oss lengur en
þér líkar en

Then (the) king spoke to Hoskuld. "You shall not remain here with us longer
than is pleasing to you but

þó þykir oss vandfengið manns í stað þinn."

still (it) seems to us hard to get a man in your stead."

Síðan leiddi konungur Höskuld til skips og mælti: "Að sómamanni hefi eg þig
reyndan og

Afterwards (the) king lead Hoskuld to (the) ship and spoke, "I have proven
you an honourable man and

nær er það minni ætlan að þú siglir nú hið síðasta sinn af Noregi svo að eg
sé hér yfirmaður."

it is near my expectation that you sail now the last time from Norway so
that I see here a master."

Konungur dró gullhring af hendi sér, þann er vó mörk, og gaf Höskuldi og
sverð gaf hann

(The) King drew a gold band from his arm, that weighed a mark (8 oz gold =
currently around $10K US) and gave (it) to Hoskuld and also he gave him a
sword



honum annan grip, það er til kom hálf mörk gulls. Höskuldur þakkaði konungi

another costly thing, that which came to (another) half a mark in gold.
Hoskuld thanked the King for the gifts
