Nú er þar til máls at taka, er þeir Víga-Óbívan ok Anakinn eru, at þeir riðu austr til Hornafjarðar.
Now it must be told (Z. mál 5), who Jedi-Obiwan and Annakinn were, that they rode eastwards to Horn's fiord.
[[Now it must be told (Z. mál 5), where Jedi-Obiwan and Annakinn were, that they rode eastwards to Horn's fiord.]]
Fylgðu Víga-Óbívani flestir allir þingmenn hans.
Nearly all his liegemen followed Jedi-Obiwan.
Fluttu þeir þá austr voru sína ok onnur fong ok fargogn, þau er þeir skyldu hafa með sér.
They then carried towards-the-east their wares and other provisions, such is their duty [have with singly???]
[[They then carried towards-the-east their wares and other provisions, those that they should have with them.]]
Síðan bjoggu þeir skip sitt.
Later they made ready their ship.
Var Víga-Óbívan við skip, þar til er búit var.
Jedi-Obiwan stayed by his ship (Z. við II 3), to the place where (Z. þar 3) it was prepared.
[[Jedi-Obiwan stayed by his ship (Z. við II 3), until (Z. þar 3) (it) was prepared.]]
En þegar er byr gaf, létu þeir í haf.
And as soon as (they) got a fair wind, they put out to sea.
Hofðu þeir langa útivist ok veðráttu illa; fóru þeir hundvillir.
They had a long journey (Z. útivist) and bad weather; they got utterly-lost.
Þat var einu hverju sinni, at þeir fengu áfoll stór þrjú nokkur, ok sagði Víga-Óbívan þá, at þeir væri nær londum ok þetta væri grunnfoll.
That was sometime that they suffered a large heavy-sea 3 times, and Jedi-Obiwan said then that they were near London and this was a breaker-on-a-shoal.
[[Grace's translation of 3 waves makes more sense than the "heavy-sea" I have, though that's what I found in Z. (under áfall). However, as I look at it again, I see that Z. has "heavy sea (dashing over a ship)," which implicitly includes the idea of a wave. Let's try: "It was sometime that they suffered 3 times waves breaking over their ship, and Jedi-Obiwan said then that they were near land and this was a breaker-on-a-shoal."
Þoka var á mikil, en veðrit óx, svá at gerði at þeim hríð mikla (Z. hríð 1).
There was much fog, and the wind grew, so that they were caught in a violent storm.
Fundu þeir eigi, fyrr en þá keyrði á land upp um nótt, ok varð þar mannbjorg, en skip brotnaði allt í spán, en fé máttu þeir ekki bjarga.
They didn't notice, before when driven up to land at night, and there was saving-of-life, but the ship (was) broken all in pieces, and they were not able to save their possessions.
[[They didn't notice, before driven up onto land at night, and everyone was saved, but the ship (was) broken all in pieces, and they were not able to save their possessions.]]
Urðu þeir at leita sér verma.
They were forced to seek to warm themselves.
En um daginn eptir gengu þeir upp á hæð nokkura.
And the day after they went a ways up a hill.
[[Or did they go "up some hill"?]]
Var þá veðr gott.
At-that-time the weather was good.
Víga-Óbívan spurði, ef þeir menn kenndi land þetta, er farit hofðu áðr.
Jedi-Obiwan asked if the (lit. "they") men knew this land, who had already gone (there).
Tveir váru menn, þeir er kenndu landit ok sogðu þá vera komna við Írland í Þíðborg.
(There) were two men who knew the land and said in-that-case (they) had (lit. "were") come to Ireland at Thidburg.
"Fá máttu vér betri landtoku," segir Víga-Óbívan, "því at Paðéma in væna Rúvísdóttir ræðr hér.
"We are able to take better lands," says Jedi-Obiwan, "because Padema the beautiful, Ruby's daughter, rules here.
[[I understand this is talking about where they landed, as opposed to "lands." However, I am not sure how the hypothetical comes in to play here in the sense that they could have landed in a better place.]]
Við henni ok Falfaðni er þat ekki mart."
Along with her, Falfaden is not friendly. [not sure how to include " þat" here]
[[OK, I see that Padema and Falfaden are not on good terms. It's more like: "It isn't friendly between her and Falfaden."
Leituðu þeir sér leynis ok reyttu á sik mosa ok lágu þar nokkura stund ok eigi langa, áðr Víga-Óbívan mælti:
They sought themselves a hiding-place and picked for themselves moss and lay there a while and not long, before Jedi-Obiwan spoke:
[[It needs to also say that they covered themselves with moss.]]
"Ekki skulu vér hér lengr liggja, svá at landsmenn verði við þat varir."
We should not lie here (any) longer, because settlers [happen by unexpectedly???]
[["Inhabitants" rather than "settlers."]]
Stóðu þeir upp síðan ok gerðu ráð sitt.
They then stood up and took counsel.
Víga-Óbívan mælti: "Ganga skulu vér á vald dróttningarinnar;
Jedi-Obiwan spoke: "We should go (in the) authority of the queens;
[[OK, "vér á vald" is "surrender to." So: "We should surrender to the queen;"
gerir oss ekki annat, því at dróttning hefir at líku líf várt, ef hon vill eptir því leita."
we do nothing else [?] because a queen has nevertheless scarely life, if she leads astray after therefore search. [???] [[the queen has their lives, etc.]]
Ganga þeir þá allir í braut þaðan.
Then they all went away from there.
Víga-Óbívan mælti, at þær skyldu engum manni segja tíðendin eða frá ferðum sinni, fyrr en hann segði dróttningu.
Jedi-Obiwan spoke, that no man should tell news or about his journey, before that he (Obiwan) tells the queen.
