Það var einu hverju sinni að þeir fengu (fá) áföll (pl of áfall) stór þrjú nokkur. Sagði Flosi
That was one particular time that they received some three great blows (from waves) (? MM&HP say the waves were threefold in size rather than in number but I don´t know why). Flosi said

þá að þeir mundu nokkur vera í nánd löndum og þetta væru grunnföll. Þoka var
to them that they would be somewhere in proximity to land and (that) this was breakers-on-a-shoal. A great mist was

á mikil en veðrið óx (vaxa) svo að hríð mikla (fem acc sg) gerði að þeim. Fundu þeir eigi fyrr
upon (them) but the weather increased so that a (it) produced a great storm against them (they were caught in a violent storm). They did not find out (which way was up) before

en þá keyrði (keyra) á land upp um nótt eina og varð þar borgið (bjarga
)mönnum en skip braut
(it) drove them (see keyra, impers, Z5) up onto land during one night and (it) became there saved for men (the men were saved, see e-m er borgit, under bjarga) but (the) ship broke

allt í spón (spánn) og fé máttu þeir ekki bjarga. Urðu þeir að leita sér verma.
all into pieces and they could not rescue (the) property. They were-obliged to seek for themselves warmth.

En um daginn eftir gengu þeir upp á hæð nokkura. Var þá veður gott. Flosi
But during the day after they walked up onto a certain hill (eminence). The weather was then good. Flosi

spurði ef nokkur maður kenndi land þetta. Þar voru þeir menn tveir er farið
asked if any man recognised this land. They, two men, were there who had travelled

höfðu áður og sögðust kenna að vísu
"og erum vér komnir við Orkneyjar í
before and (the) said-themselves to recognise certainly (at vísu, under víss, Z4) ‘and we are (have) come (arrived) by (the) Orkney Isles in

Hrossey."
Hrossey (Horse Island).’

"Fá máttum vér betri landtöku," segir Flosi, "því að Helgi Njálsson var
’We might receive better landing (I can think of better places to land),’ says Flosi,’because Helgi Njál’s-son was

hirðmaður Sigurðar jarls Hlöðvissonar er eg vó."
(the) ‘king’s-man’ of Earl Sigurð Hlöðvi’s-son who I slew.’

Leituðu þeir sér þá fylgsnis og reyttu á sig mosa og lágu svo um stund og
They searched for a hiding-place for themselves then, and picked moss over themselves and lay thus for a while and (but)

eigi langa áður Flosi mælti: "Ekki skulum vér hér liggja lengur svo að
not a long (time) before Flosi spoke: ‘We shall not lie here (any) longer so that

landsmenn verði þess varir."
(the) locals become aware of that.’

Stóðu þeir þá upp og gerðu ráð sitt.
They stood up then and made (devised) their plan.

Flosi mælti þá til sinna manna: "Vér skulum ganga allir á vald jarlsins.
Flosi spoke then to his men: ‘We shall all submit to the earl’s authority (see ganga á vald e-s, under vald, Z1).

Gerir oss ekki annað því að jarl hefir að líku líf vort (vár) ef hann vill eftir því leita."
Nothing other avails (see göra, Z7) us because (the) earl has all-the-same our life if he wants to seek for that (see leita eptir e-u, Z6).’

Gengu þeir þá allir í braut þaðan. Flosi mælti að þeir skyldu engum manni
They all then walk away from there. Flosi spoke that they should to no man (person)

segja tíðindin eða frá ferðum sínum fyrr en hann segði jarli.
say tidings or about their journeys (doings) before he said (it) to (the) earl.

Fóru þeir þá til þess er þeir fundu menn þá er þeim vísuðu til jarls. Gengu
They went then to that (point) where (ie until) they met those men who showed them to (the) earl. They walked

þeir þá fyrir jarl og kvaddi Flosi hann og allir þeir. Jarl spurði hvað
then before (the) earl and Flosi greeted him, and they all (did likewise). (The) earl asked what (kind)

manna þeir væru. Flosi nefndi sig og sagði úr hverri sveit hann var af
of men they were. Flosi named himself and said out-of which district he was from

Íslandi. Jarl hafði spurt áður brennuna og kenndist hann af því þegar við
mennina.
Iceland. (The) earl had learned before of the burning and he recognised (see kennast við, Z12) the men from that at-once.

Jarl spurði þá Flosa: "Hvað segir þú mér til Helga Njálssonar, hirðmanns míns?"
(The) Earl then asked Flosi: ‘What say you to me regarding Helgi Njál’s-son, my ‘king’s-man’

"Það," sagði Flosi, "að eg hjó höfuð af honum."
’That,’ said Flosi, ‘that I hewed (the) head from him (if you get my drift).’

Jarl mælti: "Takið þá alla."
(The) Earl spoke: ‘Take them all.’
