Mord went to court and named witnesses for himself and performed an oath on

Flosi spurði Eyjólf hvort þetta mundi rétt vera en hann lést það eigi víst
vita og sagði

Fór þá Þorkell Geitisson af þeirra hendi og sagði lögsögumanni hvar komið
var og spurði

Thorkell Geitisson went then on their behalf and told a law speaker where
(it) had come to and asked

hvort þetta væri rétt er Mörður hafði mælt.

whether that were correct what Mord had said.

Skafti svarar: "Fleiri eru nú allmiklir lögmenn en eg ætlaði. En þér til að
segja þá er þetta

Skafti answers, "Now (there) are more great lawyers than I anticipated. But
to you is to say then that

svo rétt í alla staði að hér má ekki í móti mæla. En það ætlaði eg að eg
einn mundi nú

so correct (is this) in every respect that here may not (be) spoken against.
But I expected it that I alone would now

kunna þessa lagarétting nú er Njáll er dauður því hann einn vissi eg kunna."

understand these legal rights now since Njall is dead (because?) I knew he
alone understood."

Þorkell gekk þá aftur til þeirra Flosa og Eyjólfs og sagði þeim að þetta
voru lög.

Thorkell went back then to them, Flosi and Eyjolf, and told them that that
was law.

Mörður Valgarðsson gekk þá að dómi og nefndi sér votta "í það vætti," sagði
hann, "að

witness thereof," said he, " that

eg beiði búa þá, er eg kvaddi um sök þá er eg höfðaði á hönd Flosa
Þórðarsyni,

I ask those neighbors, who I summoned concerning the case then where I
brought an action against Flosi Thordarson,

framburðar um kvið að bera annaðtveggja af eða á. Beiði eg lögbeiðingu að
dómi svo að

to bring forth delivery concerning a verdict either way, for or against. I
ask in a legal demand to court so that

Mord's jurors went then to court. One set forth the verdict but all agreed
to it and said
