I have seen it spelled eitt  and it means a group or family 
 
It seems to have some significance with the word eight
because the old Futhark   the first  six characters plus  Geofu and Wynn
Are known as Freyr/Freyja's Ætt  - I am almost sure that is also
another spelling of the "Family" side of the word.
Would you check the spelling Dear Grace, I am too Idle at present
