Þórhall spoke: ‘I shall do (devise, arrange) that, that this shall not come to (become, turn out to be, see verða at, Z8) a mispleading for you. And say
þeim að þeir trúi ekki þó að lögvillur séu gervar fyrir þeim því að vitringinum Eyjólfi hefir nú yfir sést.
to them that they trust not even if fraudulent-procedures be made for them because (it) has now been overlooked by wise-men, Eyjólf (et al).
Skalt þú nú ganga til þeirra sem hvatlegast og seg að Mörður
You shall now go to them as quickly-as-possible and say that Mörð
Valgarðsson (note nominative) gangi að dómi og nefni sér votta að ónýtt er lögruðning þeirra" og sagði
Valgarð’s-son (should) walk to (the) court call for himself witnesses that made-useless (invalidated) is their legal-challenge’ and he said.
hann þá fyrir greinilega allt hversu þeir skyldu með fara.

Mörður Valgarðsson gekk þá að dóminum og nefndi sér votta "í það vætti," sagði hann,
Mörð Valgarð’s-son walked then to the court and called for himself witnesses ‘in that witnessing,’ said he,
"að eg ónýti lögruðning Eyjólfs Bölverkssonar. Finn eg það til að hann ruddi (ryðja) eigi við
’that I make-useless (invalidate) Eyjólf Bölverk’s-son’s legal-challenge. I bring that forward (give that as a reason, see finna e-t til, Z8) that he made-the-challenge not against
aðilja frumsakar heldur við þann er með sök fór. Nefni eg mér þessa votta eða þeim er njóta þurfa þessa vættis."
the chief-prosecutor of (the) original-cause (but) rather against that-one (he) who was-managing (the) case. I call to myself these witnesses or to those who need to make-use-of this testimony (witnessing).
Síðan bar hann vættið í dóm. Nú gekk hann þar til er búarnir sátu og bað þá niður setjast
After-that he carried the witnessing into court. Now he walked there to where the neighbours sat and asked them to set-themselves down

Flosi mælti þá við Eyjólf: "Ætlar þú þetta lög vera?"
Flosi spoke then with Eyjólf:. ‘Do you think this to be (the) law?’
"Það ætla eg víst," segir Eyjólfur, "og hefir oss að vísu (see víss, Z4, as adverb) yfir sést. En þó skulum vér þetta þreyta meir með oss."
’That I think, certainly,’ says Eyjólf, ‘and (it) has been-overlooked by us, for sure. But still we shall press-on-prosecuting this more between us.’
Eyjólfur nefndi sér þá votta "í það vætti," sagði hann, "að eg ryð þessa tvo menn úr
Eyjólf called for himself then witnesses ‘in that witnessing,’ said he, ‘that I challenge these two men out-of
kviðinum" - og nefndi þá báða á nafn - "fyrir þá sök að þið eruð búðsetumenn en eigi
the jury’ – and named them both by name – ‘for that reason that you-two are cottagers (unworthy scum) and not
bændur (bóndi). Ann (unna) eg ykkur eigi að sitja í kviðinum því að nú er rétt lögruðning til ykkar
farmers. I allow you-two not to sit in the jury because now is a correct legal-challenge towards you

Kvað Eyjólfur sér nú mjög á óvart koma ef þetta mætti rengja.
Eyjólf declared (it) to take him much by surprise (see koma e-m á úvárt, under úvárr) if (one) might set-aside (reject) this.
Mæltu þá allir að þá væri vörn framar en sókn. Lofuðu nú allir mjög Eyjólf og kölluðu
Then all (everyone) spoke that then (the) defence were further-ahead than (prosecution) (what a see-sawing contest it has turned out to be!). Now all praised Eyjólf much and shouted that
engan mann (accusative) mundu þurfa að reyna við hann lögkæni (lögkoeni, noun, nom sg fem).
at skill-in-the law (it) was no use (see þurfa, Z2) for any man to strive with him
