I got to thinking about that byname, since 'chafing spear'
(and Alan's 'Chafe-spear') seemed a bit odd. It's actually
from the feminine noun <skor> 'notch, incision, score'
(specifically, its genitive singular, used as a combining
form), rather than from the verb <skora> 'to chafe; to
score, to incise; to challenge', so 'notch-spear' would seem
to be a better translation.
