Hann hóf þar frásögn, at þrír æsir fóru heiman, Óðinn ok Loki ok Hænir, ok
fóru um fjöll ok eyðimerkr, ok
He had (told) a story there that three gods went from home, Odin and Loki
and Haenir and went about mountain and desert and
var illt til matar. En er þeir koma ofan í dal nakkvarn, sjá þeir öxnaflokk
ok taka einn uxann ok snúa til
(it) was hard to (find) food. And when they come down into some valley,
they see a herd of steers and take one steer and turn to
seyðis. En er þeir hyggja, at soðit mun vera, raufa þeir seyðinn, ok var
ekki soðit. Ok í annat sinn, er þeir

the fire and (it) was not cooked. And (they repeated the process) another
time, when they
raufa seyðinn, þá er stund var liðin, ok var ekki soðit. Mæla þeir þá sín á
milli, hverju þetta mun gegna.

cooked. Then they talk among themselves, how (someone) will go against
this.
Þá heyra þeir mál í eikina upp yfir sik, at sá, er þar sat, kvaðst ráða
því, er eigi soðnaði á seyðinum. Þeir
Then they hear a voice in the oak up above them, that the one, who sat
there, says of himself to plan it when the fire did not cook. They
litu til, ok sat þar örn ok eigi lítill.
looked up and there sat an eagle and not a small one.
Þá mælti örninn: "Vilið þér gefa mér fylli mína af uxanum, þá mun soðna á
seyðinum."
Then the eagle spoke, "(if) you want to give me my fill of the steer, then
the fire will cook."
Þeir játa því. Þá lætr hann sígast ór trénu ok sezt á seyðinn ok leggr
upp þegar it fyrsta lær uxans tvau ok báða bóguna.
They agree to it. The he let himself drop from the tree (Z) and set himself
by the fire and takes at once at first ( the) ox's two thighs and both
shoulders.
Þá varð Loki reiðr ok greip upp mikla stöng ok reiðir af öllu afli ok
rekr á kroppinn erninum. Örninn
Then Loki became angry and seizes up a great pole and swings with all (his)
might and drives it into the body of the eagle. The eagle
bregzt við höggit ok flýgr upp. Þá var föst stöngin við bak arnarins, en
hendr Loka við annan enda
breaks off with the blow and flies up. Then the pole was fast in the eagle's
back and Loki's hands (fast) on the other end
stangarinnar. Örninn flýgr hátt svá, at fætr Loka taka niðr grjót ok urðir
ok viðu, en hendr hans, hyggr hann,

avalanches and wood, and his hands, he thinks,

apples and Loki wants that.
hann þá lauss ok ferr til lagsmanna sinna, ok er eigi at sinni sögð fleiri
tíðendi um þeira ferð, áðr þeir koma heim.
He becomes free then and goes to his comrades and is not that time more news
told of their journey, before they come home.
En at ákveðinni stundu teygir Loki Iðunni út um Ásgarð í skóg nökkurn ok
segir, at hann hefir fundit epli
And at the appointed time, Loki takes Idunn out of Asgard into a certain
forest and says, that he has found those apples
þau, er henni munu gripir í þykkja, ok bað, at hon skal hafa með sér sín
epli ok bera saman ok hin. Þá kemr
which she will think of value and asked that she shall have with her her
apples and also compare them? Then
þar Þjazi jötunn í arnarham ok tekr Iðunni ok flýgr braut með ok í Þrymheim
til bús síns.
giant Thjazi comes there in eagle's plumage and takes Idunn and flies away
with (her) and to Thrymheim to his home.
