From what I understand there were and are wild grapes that grow farther to the South of the main settlement site. Nothing ever mentioned that they had grape vines at the exact same place as they were camped (that was just assumed since apparently they were too lazy to travel to get supplies). Grapes could have been dried as was common and also could have been made into the somewhat jelly like paste substance that was a common way of transporting fruit at that time period. |
