"We now need to make a plan" says Karlsefni "because I think they will attack us a third time and in great numbers (a great crowd)
Nú skulum vér taka það ráð að tíu menn fari fram á nes þetta og sýni sig þar
Now we shall make this plan that ten men go forward to that point and show themselves there (?decoy)
en annað lið vort skal fara í skóg og höggva þar rjóður fyrir nautfé vort þá er liðið kemur framúr skóginum.
and the other group (of our men) shall go into the forest and cut a clearing for the cattle and this group come (in attack) from the forest
Vér skulum og taka griðung vorn og láta hann fara fyrir oss."
We shall take our Bull and have him lead us (into battle)
En þar var svo háttað er fundur þeirra var ætlaður að vatn var öðru megin enskógur á annan veg. Nú voru þessi ráð höfð er Karlsefni lagði til.
There where it was so arranged to meet them, it was decided (because) water was on one side and forest on the other way
And so this plan was made as Karlsefni suiggested
Nú komu Skrælingjar í þann stað er Karlsefni hafði ætlað til bardaga. Nú var þar bardagi og féll fjöldi af liði Skrælingja.
Now the Skrælings came to that place which Karlsefni had decided for the battle. Now there was a Battle and many fell from the band of the Skrælings
Einn maður var mikill og vænn í liði Skrælingja og þótti Karlsefni sem hann mundi vera höfðingi þeirra.
One man was tall and handsome in the troop of the Skrælings, and Karlsefni thought he would be their Chieftain
Nú hafði einn þeirra Skrælingja tekið upp öxi eina og leit á um stund og reiddi að félaga sínum og hjó til hans.
Now one of those Skrælings took up an axe and looked at it awhile, brandished it at his comrade and hewed/aimed? it at him.
Sá féll þegar dauður.
Who fell dead at once
Þá tók sá hinn mikli maður við öxinni og leit á um stund og varp henni síðan á sjóinn sem lengst mátti hann.
Then the same tall man (the one already mentioned) took the axe looks at it, and cast it into the sea as far as he was able
En síðan flýja þeir á skóginn svo hver sem fara mátti og lýkur
þar nú þeirra viðskiptum.
Then after that they flee/escape into the forest as fast as they could and it ends now, their dealings (CV)
Voru þeir Karlsefni þar þann vetur allan. En að vori þá lýsir Karlsefni að hann vill eigi þar vera lengur og vill fara til Grænlands.
Tjey Jarlsefni (&Co) were there for all that Winter.
And in the Spring, then Karlsefni decides he does not wish to stay there any longer and wants to go to Greenland
Nú búa þeir ferð sína og höfðu þaðan mörg gæði í vínviði og berjum og skinnavöru.
Now they prepare for their journey and had from there many goods (fair trade?) of grapevines and berries and furwares (Pelts)
Nú sigla þeir í haf og komu til Eiríksfjarðar skipi sínu heilu og voru þar um veturinn.
Now they put to sea and come to EiriksFjorðs and were there for the Winter
Ch 7.
Nú tekst umræða að nýju um Vínlandsferð því að sú ferð þykir bæði góð til fjár og virðingar.
Now the story turns to a discussion again/anew concerning a journey to Vinland because that/such a journey seems both good for (their) wealth and honour
Það sama sumar kom skip af Noregi til Grænlands er Karlsefni kom af
Vínlandi.
That same Summer a ship came from Norway when Karlsefni came (home) from Vinland
Því skipi stýrðu bræður tveir, Helgi og Finnbogi, og voru þann vetur á
Grænlandi. Þeir bræður voru íslenskir að kyni og úr Austfjörðum.
That ship was steered/Captained by two brothers Helgi and Finnbogi anf they were there that same Winter in Greenland. Those brothers were of Icelanders by descent and from the East Firths
Þar er nú til að taka að Freydís Eiríksdóttir gerði ferð sína heiman úr Görðum og fór til fundar við þá bræður Helga og Finnboga
That is now to turn to Freydis Eiriksdottir (who) made her journey from home out of Garð and went to a meeting with those brothers Helgiu and Finnbogi
og beiddi þá að þeir færu til Vínlands með farkost sinn og hafa helming gæða allra við hana, þeirra er þar fengjust. Nú játtu þeir því.
and she asked them whether they would go to Vinland with her ship and share half of all the goods they acquired with her.
Now they agreed to it
This seemed a good part of the story - BUT Freydis Eiriksdottir - I have heard of her, and though I have not read on I have a bad feeling about where this will turn to
