I have sent this in - but I see it has not arrived - the servers are playing silly Beggars again

Þeir kváðust ekki sjá það er tíðindum sætti.
They declared for themselves to see nothing (no tidings) of
consequence

"Eg veit eigi, "segir Leifur, "hvort eg sé skip eða sker."
"I do not know" says Leif "whether I see ship or skerry" (reef)

Nú sjá þeir og kváðu sker vera. Hann sá því framar en þeir að hann sá menn ískerinu.
Now!! they see(pointed out to them) and declare it to be a skerry'
He  saw better than they for he saw men on the skerry

"Nú vil eg að vér beitum undir veðrið, "segir Leifur, "svo að vér náum til
þeirra ef menn eru þurftugir að ná vorum fundi og er nauðsyn á að duga þeim.
"Now I wish  that we sail with the wind" says Leif "so that we reach them, if they need to be able to meet us (need our help) it is for us to Help (? duty to help)

En með því að þeir séu eigi friðmenn þá eigum vér allan kost undir oss en þeir ekki undir sér."
And with this (plan) if they be not peaceful folk then we have all the coices for us /to hand and they do not

Nú sækja þeir undir skerið og lægðu segl sitt, köstuðu akkeri og skutu
litlum báti öðrum er þeir höfðu haft með sér. Þá spurði Leifur hver þar réði fyrir liði.
Now they seek below the reef , lowered their sails, cast anchor and launched the other little boat which they had with them.
Then Leif asked who was in command of their company

Sá kveðst Þórir heita og vera norænn maður að kyni "eða hvert er þitt nafn?" Leifur segir til sín.
Then one declared himself to be named Thorir and to be a Norseman by Kindred. "and what is your name" . Leif Told him

"Ertu son Eiríks rauða úr Brattahlíð?" segir hann.
"are you (sing) the son of Eirik the Red out of Brattahlið " says he

Leif declared that it was so"Now I wish" says Laif " to invite you all to my ship and such valuables that the ship can take (if we have the room)

They accepted that choice and sailed then to EiriksFjorð with their goods until they came to Brattahlið and cattied the cargo from the ship

Afterwards Leif invited Thorir to stay with him and Guðrið his wife and three other men, and  made/arranged lodging for the other oarsmen, both Thorir and all his crew. Leif took fifteen men off the reef. After that he was known as / called Leif the Lucky

Leif became now both good (successful ) of wealth and reputation

Þann vetur kom sótt mikil í lið Þóris og andaðist hann Þórir og mikill hluti liðs hans. Þann vetur andaðist og Eiríkur rauði.
That winter a great illness came amongst Thorir's company and Thorir himself died and a great proportion of his company.
That Winter also Eirik the Red died

Nú var umræða mikil um Vínlandsför Leifs og þótti Þorvaldi bróður hans of óvíða kannað hafa verið landið.
Now was much discussion concerning Leif's Vinland journey, and Thorval his Brother thought it only to have been narrowly (?) explored

Then said Leif to Thorvald "You shall go with my ship, Brother, if you want, to Vinland; but I will want (just as well)  the ship to go first after the wood that Thorir had on the skerry.

Og svo var gert.
And thus it was done

THis was a good assignment to work with, I suppose Thorir had his ship crashed upon the reef and that these words - Reef and skerry to be interchangeable - on the balance I prefer Reef - it sounds more dangerous
