"Vera má að svo sé," segir Runólfur, "en eg hefi hina skilning að engi sé
þeirra maki síð er Gunnar að Hlíðarenda lést og er það líkara að hér dragi
öðrum hvorum til bana."
"It maybe would seem so" says Runolf "but I hold a different opinion (Z4) that (there are) none of their make since Gunnar of Hliðarend and it is here (in this case) more like to lead to someone's death
Þráinn kveðst ekki það mundu hræðast.
Thrain declared for himself he would not be scared (of that)
Then Thrain went up into Mork and was there two nights. After that he rode down into Dale and at each of the two he was sent away with honourable gifts.
(sounds like "seemly")
Markarfljót féll í meðal höfuðísa og voru á smár spengur hér og hvar.
The Markar River fell between two Ice Peaks and there were small
Ice Strips (like Icebergs - floes ??) here and there
Þráinn
sagði að hann ætlaði heim að ríða um kveldið. Runólfur mælti að hann skyldi
eigi heim ríða, sagði það varlegra vera að fara eigi sem hann hefði sagt.
Thrain said he intended to ride home that evening. Runolf spoke (to him) that he should not ride home said he should be safer and not do (just) as he said
Thrain replies "That sounds fearful - and I want not that"
[does not pride go before a stumble and a hasty spirit before a fall]
Those travelling women whom Thrain (&Co) conveyed over the river came to Bergthors Knoll
and Bergthora asked where they were from and they said they were
from the East from under EyaFells (?Islands Fells)
"Hver reiddi yður yfir Markarfljót?" segir Bergþóra
"Who carried you over the Markarfljot " says Bergthora
"Þeir er mestir oflátar voru," segja þær.
"They (the Folk) the most Arrogant (?inflated) they say
"Hverjir voru þeir?" segir Bergþóra.
"Who were they?" says Bergthora
"Þráinn Sigfússon," sögðu þær, "og fylgdarmenn hans en það þótti oss að er
þeir voru svo fjölorðir og illorðir hingað til bónda þíns og sona hans."
"Thrain Sigfusson" they said " and his followers and this they thought to us and they said full and ill of words (loud-mouthed and abusive) to here (to this place)
and so to your Husband and his Sons
Bergþóra mælti: "Margir kjósa eigi orð á sig."
Bergthora spoke "many choose not these words for themselves"
Síðan fóru þær í braut og gaf Bergþóra þeim gýligjafar og spurði þær hvenær
Þráinn mundi heim koma. Þær sögðu að hann mundi vera heiman fjórar nætur eða fimm.
After that they went away and Bergthora gave them (gýlla may be the source)
good/flattering gifts, and asked them how soon Thrain was coming home.
They sais he would be away four or five nights.
Síðan sagði Bergþóra sonum sínum og Kára mági sínum og töluðu þau
lengi leynilega.
Bergthora then told her sons and Kari her son-in-law and they talked a long time privately
En þann morgun hinn sama er þeir Þráinn riðu austan þá vaknaði Njáll snemma
og heyrði að öx Skarphéðins kom við þili.
And - on that self-same Morning when Thrain (Co) rode from the east Njal
wakened early and heard Skarpheðin's axe - against the pannelling
Stendur þá Njáll upp og gengur út.
Hann sér að synir hans eru með vopnum allir og svo Kári mágur hans.
Njal Got up and came out. He sees that all his sons and Kari his son-in-law
are all with weapons (armed to the teeth no doubt)
Skarpheðin was the first. He was in a blue (or awesome black)cloak and had a target shield and (that Famous) Axe - over his shoulder
Næst honum gekk Kári. Hann hafði silkitreyju og hjálm
gylltan, skjöld og var dreginn á leó.
Next to him was Kari. He had a silken jacket and gilded helmet and a shield with a lion drawn on it (?engraved?)
Næst honum gekk Helgi. Hann hafði
rauðan kyrtil og hjálm og rauðan skjöld og markaður á hjörtur. Allir voru
þeir í litklæðum.
Next to him was Helgi. He wore a red shirt and helmet and a red shield marked with a Stag/deer/hart.
They were all in light coloured clothing
Gifts from Bergthora (see gjalla for it may be gilded or flattering not necessarily valuable - maybe a bit flash)
Why did Skarpheðin and company dress so conspicuously then obviously they are up to mischief (Men being boys )
This was - I believe - a little better any advice welcomed
Kveðja
