Um vorið beiddust þeir Njálssynir að fara til Noregs. Jarl mælti að þeir
skyldu fara sem þeim líkaði og fékk þeim gott skip og röskva menn.
During the Spring, the, the Njalssons asked for themselves (if they may) go to Norway, The Eark said they might go if they pleased and he got for them a good/fine ship with a valiant crew

sagði þeim að hann mundi þetta sumar koma til Noregs með skatta Hákonar
jarls og "munum vér þá þar finnast," segir Kári. Og á það sammæltust þeir að
finnast þar.
Kari told them (that) simmer he would come to norway with tribute for
Earl Hakon "and we may meet one another" says Kari and with that they
agreed to meet each other there
Síðan létu þeir Njálssynir út og sigldu til Noregs og komu norður við
Þrándheim. Dvöldust þeir þar.
Afterwards the Njalssons put to sea and sailed to Norway and came North/landed at Trondheim. They atayed (anchored for a while??) there

Kolbeinn hét maður og var kallaður Arnljótarson. Hann var þrænskur maður.
Kolbein was a man's name and he was calle (?aka?) Arnljot's son he was a Trondheim man
Hann sigldi það sumar út til Íslands er Þráinn og Njálssynir fóru utan.
He sailded out to Iceland that same summer that the Njalssons travelled out
from Iceland

var þann vetur í Breiðdal austur. En um sumarið eftir bjó hann skip sitt í
Gautavík.

Og þá er þeir voru mjög búnir reri að þeim maður á báti og festi
bátinn við skipið en gekk síðan upp á skipið til fundar við Kolbein.
And then they were really ready to go a man rowed up to them in a boat

Kolbeinn spurði þenna mann að nafni.
Kolbein inquired the man as to his name
"Hrappur heiti eg," segir hann.
"Hrapp I am named" says he
"Hvers son ert þú?" segir Kolbeinn.
"Whose son are you " says Kolbein
Hrappur svarar: "Eg er son Örgumleiða Geirólfssonar gerpis."
Hrapp replied "I am the son of Orgumleið (who is) son of Geirolf Warrior
"Hvað vilt þú mér?" segir Kolbeinn.
"What do you want with me* says Kolbein
"Eg vil biðja þig," segir Hrappur, "að þú flytjir mig um haf."
"I want to ask of you" says Hrapp "that you convey me across the sea"
Kolbeinn spyr: "Hver nauðsyn er þér á?"
Kolbein enquires " What is your need in this"
"Eg hefi vegið víg eitt," segir Hrappur.
"I have committed a man-slaughter" says Hrapp
"Hvert víg er það," segir Kolbeinn, "eða hverjir eru til eftirmáls?"
"What slaying is that" says Kolbein "or who are entitled to redress"

Hrappur svarar: "Eg hefi vegið Örlyg Ölvisson Hróðgeirssonar hins hvíta en
til eftirmáls eru Vopnfirðingar."
Hrapp replies "I have killed Orlyg Olvisson (who is) son of Hroðgeir the White
but the redress is due to the People of Weaponfirth
"Þess get eg að sá hafi verr er þig flytur," segir Kolbeinn.
"I guess one could get the worse of it who conveys you" says Kolbein

Hrappur mælti: "Vinur er eg vinar míns en geld eg það er illa er til mín
gert enda skortir mig eigi fé til að leggja fyrir farið."
Hrapp said" I am a friend to my friends and I repay that which is ill-done to me and to mine and money is not lacking to pay for the passage
Síðan tók Kolbeinn við Hrappi.
After that Kolbein received Hrapp
Litlu síðar gaf byr og sigla þeir í haf. Hrapp þraut vistir í hafi.
A little after that was a wind and they sailed out to sea
Hrapp's food failed at sea (he had not fetched enough)

Kolbeini og bauð hann Hrappi í mötuneyti sitt og hann þá það.
This was told to Kolbein and so he offered mess-mateship
which was accepted
which of course it would be - beats getting thrashed for cadging
