Í þessu varð þeim litið til hafs. Sjá þeir þá að skip fara sunnan fyrir
nesið og voru eigi
In this (situation) they happened to look towards (the) sea. They see then
that ships sail from the south before (the) point and were no
færri en tíu. Þeir róa mikinn og stefna að þangað. Er þar skjöldur við

Helgi segir til sín og sagði að í móti voru þeir Grjótgarður og Snækólfur.
Helgi tells him his (name) and said against (them) were they, Grjotgard and
Snaekolf.
"En hverjir eru stýrimenn?" sagði sjá.
"And who are captains?" said that one.
Helgi svaraði: "Bárður svarti er lifir en annar er fallinn hér fyrir
víkingum og hét sá Ólafur en bróðir minn heitir Grímur er mér fylgir."
Helgi answered, "Black Bard is alive but another is fallen here by the
pirates and that one was called Olaf and my brother, who accompanies me, is
called Grim.
"Eruð þið íslenskir menn?" segir sjá.
"Are you Icelanders?" says that one.
"Svo er víst," segir Helgi.
"That is for sure," says Helgi.
Hann spurði hvers synir þeir væru. Þeir sögðu.
He asked whose sons they were. They told (him).
Þá kannaðist hann við og mælti: "Nafnfrægir eruð þér feðgar."
He recognized them at that and spoke, "You are reknown, fathers and sons."
"Hver ert þú?" segir Helgi.
"Who are you?" says Helgi.
"Kári heiti eg og er Sölmundarson."
"I am called Kari and am Solmund's son."
"Hvaðan komst þú að?" segir Helgi.
"From where do you come?" says Helgi.
"Úr Suðureyjum," segir Kári.
"Out of the Hebrides," says Kari.
"Þá ert þú vel að kominn," segir Helgi, "ef þú vilt veita oss nokkuð."
"Then you are well come," says Helgi, "if you wish to help us somewhat."
"Veita slíkt sem þér þurfið," segir Kári, "eða hvers beiðið þér?"
"(I will) help such as you need," says Kari, "or what do you ask?"
"Veita þeim atlögu," segir Helgi.
"Help attack them," says Helgi.
Kári sagði að svo skyldi vera.
Kari said that so should (it) be
Lögðu þeir þá að þeim og tókst þá bardagi í annað sinn. En er þeir hafa
barist um hríð
They attacked them then and then took up (the) battle another time. But
when they have fought each other for some time
hleypur Kári upp á skip til Snækólfs. Hann snýr í móti Kára og höggur til
hans. Kári
Kari leaps up on a ship to Snaekolf. He turns to meet Kari and hews at him.
Kari
hleypur yfir slá eina er lá um þvert skipið aftur öfugur. Snækólfur hjó í
slána svo að fal
leaps over one crossbeam which lay across the ship turned back the wrong
way. Snaekolf hewed into the crossbeam so that
báða eggteina sverðsins. Kári höggur til hans og kom sverðið á öxlina og
varð höggið svo

Grjótgarður skaut

spjóti til Kára. Kári sá það og hljóp í loft upp en spjótið missti hans. Í
því voru þeir
a spear at Kari. Kari saw it and leaped up aloft and (the) spear missed
him. At that they,
Grímur og Helgi komnir til móts við Kára. Hleypur þá Helgi að Grjótgarði og
leggur
Grim and Helgi, were come to meet Kari. Then Helgi leaps at Grjotgard and
runs
sverði í gegnum hann og varð það hans bani. Gengu þeir þá um skip öll með
báðum

Eftir það leggja
