Þá mælti Bárður: "Hvað skal nú til ráða taka því að menn þessir munu veita
oss aðsókn?"
Then Bard spoke "What plan do you take - these men may/will attack us"
Síðan ræddu þeir um hvort þeir skyldu verja sig eða gefast upp en áður þeir
höfðu ráðið komu að víkingar.
Then they discussed/argued what they should do - defend or give themselves up (flight of fight?) but (?) while they argued the Vikings came to them (?Surrounded)
Spurðu þá hvorir aðra að nöfnum, hvað
fyrirmenn hétu. Þá nefndust fyrirmenn kaupmanna og spurðu í móti hverjir
fyrir víkingum væru.
They inquired either of the other - the Captain's name. The Captains of the Merchants named themselves and asked who the Vikings were
Annar nefndist Grjótgarður en annar Snækólfur, synir
Moldans úr Dungalsbæ í Skotlandi, frændur Melkólfs Skotakonungs
One named himself Grjotgarð (Stonegard) and the other Snaekolf (Snow-wolf) ,
sons of Moldan of Duncansbay in Scotland and Kinsmen of Malcolm King of Scots
"og eru
kostir tveir af oss gervir," segir Grjótgarður, "að þér gangið á land en vér
munum taka fé yðvart. Hinn er annar að vér munum sækja að yður og drepa
hvern mann er vér náum."
"and two choices (?two) are to you - to go on land (ashore) and give us all your money/goods or else we attack and kill everyone we catch

Helgi svarar: "Það vilja kaupmenn að verja sig."
Helgi replies "The Merchants will defend themselves"
Þá mæltu kaupmenn: "Mæl þú alls vesall. Hverja vörn munum vér veita? Og er
fé fjörvi firra.
"the Merchants said "Thou speakest as a (complete/utter) wretch - how shall we defend - and is money worth a life
Grímur tók það ráð að hann æpti á víkinga og lét þá eigi heyra illan kurr
kaupmanna.
Grim took to shouting at the Vikings not to let them hear the merchants complaining/grousing
Bárður og Ólafur mæltu: "Hyggið þér eigi að Íslendingar muni gera spott að
látum yðrum? Takið nú heldur vopn yður og verjum oss."
Bard and Olaf spoke (i.e. to the merchants)
"The Icelanders will think nothing of you (scorn you) - Take up your weapons and defend yourselves"
Tóku þeir þá allir
vopn sín og festu það með sér að þeir skyldu aldrei upp gefast meðan þeir
mættu verja sig.
They all took up weapons and swore/pledged not to give up while they could fight/ defend

Víkingar skjóta nú á þá og tókst nú orusta og verja kaupmenn sig vel.
The Vikings now shot at them and the fight started, the merchants
defended themselves well
Snækólfur hleypur að Ólafi og leggur í gegnum hann með spjóti.
Snaekolf l;eapt towards Olaf and ran him throught with a spear
Grímur leggur
til Snækólfs spjóti og svo fast að hann féll útbyrðis.
Grim thrust at Snaekolf with a spear so that he fell overboard
Helgi sneri þá til
móts við Grím og ráku þeir ofan alla víkinga og jafnan voru þeir Njálssynir
þar er mest þurfti.
Helgi joined up with Grim and they (together) pushed the Vikings back
and they were ever where need was greatest
Víkingar kölluðu og báðu kaupmenn upp gefast en þeir
sögðu að þeir skyldu aldrei upp gefast.
The Vikings called on the merchants to surrender
but they said they never would give themselves up
