I was not too displeased with this until the Legal Eagle - Gizur the White stepped in with his legal circumlocutions then it all went pretty much to pieces

They then ride home and tell the tidings/news. Hallgerð was well pleased and praised the work/deeds greatly

They, Gizur the white and Geir Priest rode to the place, gave notice of the Killings and summoned the Neighbours to Althing. Then rode back West.
Þeir Njáll og Gunnar fundust og töluðu um bardagann.
They - Njal and Gunnar met together and discussed the battle
Þá mælti Njáll til Gunnars: "Ver þú nú var um þig. Nú hefir þú vegið tvisvar
í hinn sama knérunn.
Then said Njal to Gunnar "You must now be very careful of yourself. Now you have killled twice in the same kinship
Hygg nú svo fyrir hag þínum að þar liggur við líf þitt

think for yourself (?for your own good) that it will lie against your life if you do not pay up this settlement " (got stuck here - the first time)
"Hvergi ætla eg mér af að bregða," segir Gunnar, "en þó mun eg þurfa
liðsinni yðvart á þingi."
"By no means (Z) do I intend to break it" says Gunnar but I shall need your support at Thing*
Njáll svaraði: "Halda mun eg við þig mínum trúnaði til dauðadags."
Njal replied "I shall hold with you my oath of alleigance (Z) until my death-day"

and declared in these words " I give notice coming under the law (Z) of a personal assault (Z) at the hand of Gunnar Hamundarsson that he made an unlawful assault on Thorgeir Otkelsson

and he inflicted a mortal wound (Z) which did indeed cause Thorgeir's death

I refer this charge to the Quarterly Court (?Court of Quarter Sessions) according to law making a legal declaration
I refer to a Hearing (?Public) at Law Rock
I now refer this prosecution in the summer (?) and to full guilt at the hand of Gunnar Hamundarsson
The declaration of the Demand for Outlawry - puts me in mind of the Declaration against Hereward (the Wake) he was said to be "Outlaw and Wolf's Head"
Was there a set pattern or words - that MUST be used to make it legal
