Not best pleased with this at all I have to send in what I have here
Þá Bjarna Grímólfsson bar í Grænlandshaf og komu í maðksjá.
Bjarni Grimolfsson (and his ship) was borne into the Greenland Sea -(the sea West of Ireland) and came to a sea full of worms
Fundu þeir eigi
fyrr en skipið gerist maðksmogið undir þeim.
They saw it not sooner and the ship became wormridden under them
Þá töluðu þeir um hvert ráð þeir skyldu taka.
They discussed what plan they should take (up)
Þeir höfðu eftirbát þann er bræddur var seltjöru. Það
segja menn að skelmaðkurinn smjúgi eigi það tré er seltjörunni er brætt.
They had a boat which had been treated/caulked with the (CV p522) tar from seal fat. It is said the worms sickness could not get/creep in that which was treated with seal tar
Var
það flestra manna sögn og tillaga að skipa mönnum bátinn svo sem hann tæki
upp.
There were many of the crew for filling the boat with all it could take up
En er það var reynt þá tók báturinn eigi meir upp en helming manna.
Bjarni mælti þá að menn skyldu fara í bátinn og skyldi það fara að
hlutföllum en eigi að mannvirðingum.
When that was tried it took no more than half of the men
Bjarni said men should go into the boat on a draw of lots and not by rank (Manworthyness)
En hver þeirra manna vildi fara í
bátinn sem þar voru, þá mátti hann eigi við öllum taka.
But how they wanted to all get in and it would not take them all

They went along with the plan of lots - who goes in the boat or on the ship
Hlutaðist þar svo til að
Bjarni hlaut að fara í bátinn og nær helmingur manna með honum. Þá gengu
þeir af skipinu og í bátinn er til þess höfðu hlotist.
The Lots were drawn and Bjarni drew to go in the boat and near half of his crew with him. They went off the ship and into the boat as they had been drawn
Þá er menn voru komnir í bátinn mælti einn ungur maður íslenskur sá er verið
hafði förunautur Bjarna: "Ætlar þú Bjarni að skiljast hér við mig?"
Then when all were in (the boat) - spoke up a young Icelandic man who was companion to Bjarni "Is it your wish to leave me here Bjarni"
Bjarni svarar: "Svo verður nú að vera."
Bjarni replies "that is how it is to be"
Hann segir: "Svo með því að þú hést mér eigi því þá er eg fór með þér frá
Íslandi frá búi föður míns."
He says "This was not what you declared/promised to me when - for you - I left my fathers farm in Iceland"
Bjarni segir: "Eigi sé eg hér þó annað ráð til eða hvað leggur þú hér til
ráðs?"
Bjarni says "I see no other way, what idea/plan do you have"
Hann segir: "Sé eg ráðið til að við skiptumst í rúmunum og farir þú hingað
en eg mun þangað."
He says "I suggest that we change places and you come up here and I go down there"
Bjarni svarar: "Svo skal vera og það sé eg að þú vinnur gjarna til lífs og
þykir mikið fyrir að deyja."
Bjarni replies "Thus shall it be - I see that you hold life eagerly (gjarna) and are much afraid to die"
[Gjarna is about equal to the German gern - and in Bjarni's remarks I see criticism - is he implying the lad is a coward for his fear]
Skiptust þeir þá í rúmunum. Gekk þessi maður í bátinn en Bjarni upp í skipið
Exchanged they then places. This man went on the boat and Bjarni up on the ship
og er það sögn manna að Bjarni létist þar í maðkahafinu og þeir menn sem í
skipinu voru með honum.
and it had been said by peop0le that Bjarni perished there in the Maggot-Ridden sea and his men with him
En báturinn og þeir er þar voru á fóru leiðar sinnar
til þess er þeir tóku land og sögðu þessa sögu síðan.
But that one boat (boat + def.art) and those in it went away and landed and related this story afterwards
