I must make a study of these names - I do not know if I am right in disagreeing with the CSOI and I just snagged some of the names Grace puts forward - they ARE good Einn af þeim hét Vífill. Hann var ættstór maður og hafði verið hertekinn fyrir vestan haf og var kallaður ánauðigur áður Auður leysti hann. One of them was named Vifil. He was a noble and had been captured in the West (CSOI - Britain) and he was called a slave before Auð freed him Og er Auður gaf bústað skipverjum sínum þá spurði Vífill hví Auður gæfi honum öngvan bústað sem öðrum mönnum. And when Auð gave living-space to her crew - then asked Vifil why Auð gave him no farm the same as the others Auður kvað eigi mundu skipta, kvað hann þar göfgan mundu þykja sem hann væri. Auð declared it made no difference, declared that he would be thought as noble as he was (with or without land) Honum gaf Auður Vífilsdal og bjó hann þar. Hann átti konu. Þeirra synir voru þeir Þorgeir og Þorbjörn. Þeir voru efnilegir menn og óxu upp með föður sínum. Auð gave to him Vifil's Dale and he lived/settled there. He had a wife. Their sons were worthy men and grew up with their Father (presumably not fostered - otherwise why say that)
Þorvaldur hét maður. Hann var son Ásvalds Úlfssonar, Yxna-Þórissonar. Eiríkur rauði hét son hans. Thorvald was a man's name, He was the son of Asvald Ulfsson - son of Oxen-Thorir (??the man who hired or sold Oxen) Eirik the Red was his son's name Þeir feðgar fóru af Jaðri til Íslands fyrir víga sakir og námu land á Hornströndum og bjuggu að Dröngum. Þar andaðist Þorvaldur. They, Father and son went from Jaðri to Iceland because of some killings (they were on the run) and took land (settled) at Hornstrand of Drangar (CSOI) Thorvald died there Eiríkur fékk þá Þjóðhildar dóttur Jörundar Úlfssonar og Þorbjargar knarrarbringu er þá átti Þorbjörn hinn haukdælski. Eirik married there Thjoðhild the daughter of Jorund Ulfsson and Thorborg Ship's Breast(was she thus well-endowed in her figure) who was then (at the time) married to Thorbjorn the Hawksdaler (CSOI - of Hawkdale) Réðst Eiríkur þá norðan og ruddi land í Haukadal og bjó á Eiríksstöðum hjá Vatnshorni. Eirik turned away from the North and cleared land in Hawkdale and lived at Eirik's Stead near Lake Corner Þá felldu þrælar Eiríks skriðu á bæ Valþjófs á Valþjófsstöðum. Eyjólfur saur frændi hans drap þrælana hjá Skeiðsbrekkum upp frá Vatnshorni. There Eirik's thralls(slaves) caused a landslide on Valthjolf's Farm at Valthjolf's stead. Dirty Eyjolf (CSOI filth-Eyjolf) killed the slaves near Skid Slope over at Vatnshorn (?lake Corner) Fyrir það vó Eiríkur Eyjólf saur. Hann vó og Hólmgöngu-Hrafn að Leikskálum. Geirsteinn og Oddur á Jörva, frændur Eyjólfs, mæltu eftir hann. For this Eirik killed Dirty Eyjolf. He also killed Raven the Dueller at Leikskalar - Gerstein and Odd from Jorvi (were) kinsmen of Eyjolf and sought compensation - (lit spoke for him) Þá var Eiríkur ger á brott úr Haukadal. Hann nam þá Brokey og Yxney og bjó að Tröðum í Suðurey hinn fyrsta vetur. Then Eirik was sent away from Hawkdale (CSOI - Outlawed) he took lands at Brok and Oxney and lived at Trodir on Sudurey the first winter. Þá léði hann Þorgesti setstokka. Síðan fór Eiríkur í Yxney og bjó á Eiríksstöðum. Þá heimti hann setstokkana og náði eigi. There he loaned to Thorgest some Bedboards (CSOI -I can find no really satisfactory word for these) Afterwards Eirik goes to Oxney and settles at EiriksStead. There he asked for the (return of) the Bedboards and had them not (unsuccessful) Eiríkur sótti setstokkana á Breiðabólstað en Þorgestur fór eftir honum. Þeir börðust skammt frá garði að Dröngum. Þar féllu tveir synir Þorgests og nokkurir menn aðrir. Eirik went to fetch (CV) the Bedboards at Breiðabolstað and Thorgest went after him. They fought before the Courtyard(Z3) at Drangar - there fell Thorgest's two sons and some other men (besides) Eftir það höfðu hvorirtveggju setu fjölmenna. Styr veitti Eiríki og Eyjólfur úr Svíney, Þorbjörn Vífilsson og synir Þorbrands úr Álftafirði After that the two of them both kept many men, Styr supported Eirik also (did) Eyjolf of Swiney, Thorbjorn Vifilsson, and the sons of Thorbrand of Alftafjord. en Þorgesti veittu synir Þórðar gellis og Þorgeir úr Hítardal og Áslákur úr Langadal og Illugi son hans. but Thorgest - was supported by the sons of Thorðar Bellows (the shouter) and Thorgeir of Hitardale and Aslak of Longdale and Illugi his son I have done what I believe to be my best with this - but those names I feel sure I have some of them wrong Any critique welcome Kveðja Patricia | |||
