"Eigi réð eg því," segir Gissur, "og hvorgi okkar Geirs."
"I did not advise that" says Gizur "and neither did Geir
(neither of the two of us)
"Þá muntu vilja synja þess með
skynsemd," segir Gunnar.
"Then you will want to deny this with reason" (prove it?)
says Gunnar
"Hvers beiðist þú um?" segir Gissur.
"What are you asking for " says Gizur
"Þess
að þú vinnir eið," segir Gunnar.
"This, that you take an oath" says
Gunnar
"Það vil eg gera," segir Gissur, "ef þú vilt þiggja
sjálfdæmið."
"That will I do" says Gizur "if you will accept
self-judgement"
"Það bauð eg fyrir stundu," segir Gunnar, "en nú
þykir mér um meira að
dæma."
"That I offered some time back" says Gunnar "but now to
me seems greater things to judge"
Njáll mælti: "Eigi er að
níta sjálfdæminu, þess að meiri sæmdar er fyrir
vert, er meira er
málið."
Njal spoke "It is not (done) to refuse
selfjudgement it is (worthy of) a greater honour when the suit (case) is
greater"
Gunnar mælti: "Gera mun eg til skaps vina minna að dæma
málið. En það ræð eg
Otkatli að ekki geri hann til saka við mig síðan."
Gunnar said "I will do as my friends wish to judge the
case. But I advise/warn Otkel not to do anything to harm me
further
Then (one) was sent after Hoskuld and Hrut and they came there.
Then Gizur and Geir Priest swore the oath and Gunnar made
judgements - and counseled with no one (asked no advice) and after that he
declared (an end) to his judgement.
"Það er gerð mín," sagði hann,
"að eg geri verð húss og matar þess er inni
var. En fyrir þrælinn vil eg þér
ekki bæta þar er þú leyndir annmarka á
honum.
"It is my judgement" said he "that I pay the value of the store and the food that was inside. But for that slave I will not compensate because you concealed a fault in him
Geri eg hann þér til handa Otkell því að þar eru eyru sæmst sem óxu.
I make him over to your hands Otkel because the ears fit
best where they grew
I judge that you have summoned me to be shamed (to bring disgrace) and because of that I judge into my hands the value of the house and contents that was burned. (pain and anguish compensation)
En ef
yður þykir betra að vér séum ósáttir þá læt eg þess enn kost en
gert hefi eg
And if it seems to you better that we are not reconciled
then I have one other choice and that shall then be brought
forward
Gissur svarar: "Það viljum vér að þú gjaldir ekki fé
en þess beiðum vér að
þú sért vinur Otkels."
Gizur answers We wish that you do not repay the money but
we ask you to be Otkel's friend"
"Það skal verða aldrei," segir
Gunnar, "meðan eg lifi og mun hann hafa
vináttu Skammkels. Þeirri hefir hann
lengi hlítt."
"That shall never be" says Gunnar "while I live he can
keep Skammkell's friendship he has had that for a long time
Gissur
svarar: "Þó viljum vér nú lúka málinu þó að þú ráðir einn
skildaganum. "
Gizur replies "Evenso we want to close the matter though
you alone have set the conditions
Voru þá handsalaðar þessar
sættir allar.
Then there were handshakes as all was
settled
mig."
Gunnar spoke to Otkel "It is to be advised that you go
home (to live) with your kin but if you want to stay here (in the
district) do not harm me.
Gissur mælti: "Þetta er heilræði og skal
hann svo gera."
Gizur spoke " that is good counsel and he shall do
it"
Gunnar had great honour/respect from (as result of) the lawsuit and afterwards men rode home from Thing.
Now sits Gunnar in his home and it is now quiet for a time
(that is of course until next time)
Any critique welcome
