Síðan töluðu þau lengi hljótt og vissi engi maður hvað þau höfðu í
ráðagerðum.

After that they conversed a long lime quietly and no man knew what was planned

Einu sinni var það að Gunnar var eigi heima. Þá var Sigmundur heima og þeir
félagar. Þar var kominn Þráinn frá Grjótá. Þá sátu þau Hallgerður úti og
töluðu.

At one time (on an occasion) when Gunnar was not at home. There were there Sigmund and his companion at home. There was come (came) Thrainn from Grjota (Stoney) They sat out  with Hallgerð and talked

Þá mælti Hallgerður: "Því hafið þið heitið félagar Sigmundur og Skjöldur að
drepa Þórð leysingjason fóstra Njálssona en þú hefir mér því heitið Þráinn
að vera við staddur."

Then Hallgerð spoke "The friends Sigmund and Skjold promised to kill Thorð Freedmansson the Foster father of the sons of Njal (the Neilsons) and you have promised - Thrainn ro be there as onlooker  (a not so innocent bystander)

Þeir gengu við allir að þeir höfðu þessu heitið henni.

They went with (accepted) they had made these promises to her

"Nú mun eg gefa ráðið til," sagði hún. "Þið skuluð ríða austur í Hornafjörð
eftir fé ykkru og koma heim um þing öndvert

"Now must I give the plan to you" said she " That you shall ride East to Hornafjord to see to your property/goods and (return) come home when Thing has begun

en ef þið eruð heima mun Gunnar
vilja að þið ríðið til þings með honum. Njáll mun vera á þingi og synir hans
og svo Gunnar. En þið skuluð þá drepa Þórð."

But if you are at home Gunnar will want you to ride to Thing with him. Njal will be at Thing and his sons and also (because of it) will Gunnar. And you (pl) shall then kill Thorð

Þeir játtu að þessi ráðagerð skyldi fram koma.

They consented (Z3) to carry out/perform this plan

Síðan bjuggust þau austur í
fjörðu og varaðist Gunnar það ekki og reið Gunnar til þings.

Afterwards they prepared themselves to ride to Eastfjords. Gunnar suspected nothing of it.  and Gunnar rode to Thing

Njáll sendi Þórð leysingjason austur undir Eyjafjöll og bað hann vera í
brautu eina nótt.

Njal sent Thorð Freedmansson east to Eyjafjol and bade him stay away for one night 

Hann fór austur og gaf honum eigi austan því að fljótið
var svo mikið að langt var um óreitt.

He went to the East and did not/could not return from the east because the river was (risen) so great and long/slow to go down (ó-reitt) (like it was slow to right itself)

Njáll beið hans eina nótt því að hann
ætlaði að hann skyldi riðið hafa til þings með honum.

Njal waited another day / night he had wanted/planned to take him (Thorð) with him (Njal) to Thing

Njáll mælti við
Bergþóru að hún skyldi senda Þórð til þings þegar hann kæmi heim. Tveim
nóttum síðar kom Þórður austan.

Njall spoke with Bergthora that she should send Thorð to Thing as soon as he came home. Two nights later came Thorð from the East.

Bergþóra sagði honum að hann skyldi til þings ríða "en nú skalt þú fyrst
fara upp í Þórólfsfell og sjá þar um bú og vera þar eigi lengur en eina nótt
eða tvær."

Bergthora said to him that he should ride to Thing  "but now shall you first go up to Thorolfsfell  and see to / oversee the Farm but be not longer than a night or two
