Most MSS have "klyfjaburðurinn".

Literally, yes, but "fljúgast á" just means "fight,
wrestle, brawl".

There is an old Icelandic joke that the complete
contents of the Icelanders' sagas can be summed up
in three words: "Bændur flugust á" (farmers came
to blows). Not very funny, I guess.

Nope, sorry - this is the verb - "and that seemed harmless
enough (Cook)". SAKA (impersonal) = injure, cause harm:

Það sakar ekki að reyna = it can't hurt to try
