Gunnar reið og
þeir allir til þings.
Gunnar rode and they all to Thing (better - Gunnar and
all his company)
En er þeir komu
á þing þá voru þeir svo
vel búnir að engir voru þeir þar að jafnvel væru
búnir og fóru menn út úr
hverri búð að undrast þá.
When they came to Thing they were all so well attired
that none there was equally dressed (as they were) and people came out of every
booth to wonder at them (admire them might be better)
Gunnar reið til
búða Rangæinga og var þar með
frændum sínum.
Gunnar rode to the Booths of the Rangar Vale
Folk and was there with his kinsmen
Margur maður
fór að finna Gunnar og spyrja hann tíðinda. Hann
var við alla menn léttur og
kátur og sagði öllum slíkt er vildu.
Many men went to meet Gunnar and to inquire for his tidings.
He was with all men cheerful/light and merry and told to all as they
wished.
(I reckon this is just saying - Alan - they asked for news and he
gave it ??)
Hann
gekk fyrir neðan
Mosfellingabúð .
That was one (certain) day that Gunnar was
walking from the LawRock, he passed near to (?below) the Mosfell People's
Booth
Þá sá hann
konur ganga í móti sér og voru vel búnar. Sú var
í ferðarbroddi konan er best
var búin.
There he saw some women walking towards him and they
were (all) well dressed, she who walked in front (of the group) was the best
dressed
En er þau
fundust kvaddi hún þegar
Gunnar. Hann tók vel kveðju hennar og spurði hvað
kvenna hún væri. Hún
nefndist Hallgerður og kvaðst vera dóttir Höskulds
Dala-Kollssonar.
When they met each other (refl.?) she greeted Gunnar at
once.
He took well to her greeting and asked which of the
women she might be (?subj)
She named herself Hallgerð and declared herself to be
daughter of Hoskuld Dale-Kollsson
She spoke to him boldly and asked him to tell her of
his travels and he declared he would not refuse to tell the
story
Settust þau þá
niður og töluðu.
They sat themselves down to talk
She was dressed in this way - she was attired in a red
kirtle and (it) was richly ornamented
Hún hafði
yfir
She had over (around) herself a scarlet cloak and (it
was) richly worked all down to the hem
(Grace don't like to use "lace" no and neither do I - I
appreciate her Historical reference) "Worked - could cover the decoration better
perhaps)
Her hair fell over her bosom and was both thick and
fair
Gunnar var í
tignarklæðum þeim er
Haraldur konungur Gormsson gaf honum. Hann hafði og
hringinn á hendi
Hákonarnaut. Þau töluðu lengi hátt.
Gunnar was in the State Robes which King Harald Gormson
had given him. He had that (particular - suff.def.art.) ring on his arm -
Hakon's gift - They talked pleasantly for a long time
Þar kom er hann
spurði hvort hún væri
ógefin.
There came (a moment) when he asked if she was not given (in
marriage)
She said it was so "and it is that many would not
chance/risk it" says she
"Þykir þér hvergi fullkosta?" segir
hann
"Think you no one worthy of you?" says he.
"Eigi er
það," segir hún, "en mannvönd mun eg vera."
"That is not it" says she "but I am exacting/particular with men
(apt to be choosy)
"Hversu munt þú svara ef eg bið þín?" segir
Gunnar.
"How may you answer if a ask you?" says Gunnar
"Það
mun þér ekki í hug," segir hún.
"That is not in your heart" says she
"Eigi er það,"
segir hann.
"Not is it so (like that)" says he (he has it much at heart
)
"Ef þér er nokkur hugur á," segir hún, "þá finn þú föður
minn."
"If you have some desire of it" says she "then see my
Father"
Síðan skildu þau talið.
After (this) they broke off the conversation
Gunnar
Gunnar went at once to the booth of the Dalesmen and
met outside in front of the booth(some) men and asks whether Hoskuld were in the
booth and was told that he was there
Gekk
þá
Gunnar inn. Höskuldur og Hrútur tóku vel við Gunnari. Hann settist niður
í
meðal þeirra og fannst það ekki í tali þeirra að þar hefði nokkur
misþykkja
í meðal verið.
Gunnar went there-in, Hoskuld and Hrut took well with
Gunnar.
He sat himself down in between them and there seemed from their talk that
no misunderstanding had been between them
I
have gone through this very carefully - at all events with the larger text - it
seems I can see my mistakes and typo's more clearly, which is a good
thing
Any comments welcome
