I read in Stefán Einarsson's Icelandic Grammar (1945) that the
pronunciation /rn/ was "literary or dialectal." But I don't think he
gives any indication of which regions people would say /rn/ in. A
question for all you Icelanders: Would you be equally likely to leave
out the /r/ after a long vowel, e.g. in 'stjórn', 'heyrn'? I'm sure
I've come across spellings such as 'eirn' for 'einn' in the 18th &
19th c. paper manuscripts at Saganet.
