I am not 100% certain about this, but my immediate understanding of
this is "eftir" = "subsequently". He would, in effect, be saying "I
think I can now see what is going to happen, what is going to result
from this, what will follow". But it may be something subtler,
although I can't quite get anything else to fit ....

The meaning would be similar to the meaning of "after" in "Jill
came tumbling after", something like "in his wake", if you get
my drift.
