Það var eitthvert haust að heimtur voru illar á fé manna og var Glúmi vant
margra geldinga.

It was sometime (around) harvest time that the bringing home of the sheep
went badly (as) to men's sheep and it was to Glum missing many wethers.

Þá mælti Glúmur við Þjóstólf: "Gakk þú á fjall með húskörlum mínum og vitið
ef þér finnið nokkuð af sauðum."

Then Glum spoke with Þjóstólf, "You go to (the) mountain with my house
servants and see if you find any of (the) sheep."

"Ekki eru mér fjárleitir hentar," sagði Þjóstólfur, "enda er það ærið eitt
til að eg vil eigi

to go on (the) tracks (hunt) with your thralls. And you go yourself I will
then go with you."

Þetta varð þeim að orðum mjög.

(Concerning) this happened (between) them many words.

Hallgerður sat úti og var á veður gott.

Hallgerd sat outdoors and (the) weather was good.

Glúmur gekk að henni og mælti: "Illt höfum við Þjóstólfur nú saman átt og
munum við

Glum went to her and spoke, "We have had a problem with Þjóstólf now
together and we will

that which they had discussed.

Hallgerður mælti þá eftir Þjóstólfi og varð þeim þá mjög að orðum.

Hallgerd spoke then in favor of Þjóstólf and (between) them then occurred
many words.

Glúmur drap til hennar hendi sinni og mælti: "Ekki deili eg við þig lengur"
og gekk síðan

Glum slapped her with his hand and spoke, "I do not deal with you (any)
longer," and went thence

Þjóstólfur gekk að henni og mælti: "Sárt ert þú leikin og skyldi eigi svo
oft."

Þjóstólf went to her and spoke, "Sorely are you treated and should not (be)
so often."

"Ekki skalt þú þessa hefna," segir hún, "og engan hlut í eiga hversu sem með
okkur fer."

"You shall not avenge this," says she, " and it is none of your business?
how as with us goes."

Hann gekk í braut og glotti við.

He went away and smiled scornfully.
