Rightly or wrongly I  read and tried to forget the dictionaries and go ahead - the result being that I would like anyone  to comment on anything - but especially the underlined bits
 
 
15. kafli

Þjóstólfur hafði barið húskarl Höskulds og rak Höskuldur hann í braut. Hann
tók hest sinn og vopn sín og mælti við Höskuld: "Nú mun eg á braut fara og
koma aldrei aftur."
Thjostolf had beaten a house-karl of Hoskulds and Hoskuld ordered him away.
He took his horse and his weapons and said (with) - to Hoskuld "Now I shall go away and
never come back

"Allir munu því fagna," segir Höskuldur,
"All will welcome that " says Hoskuld

Þjóstólfur reið til þess er hann kom til Varmalækjar. Hann hafði þar góðar
viðtökur af Hallgerði en eigi illar af Glúmi.
Thjostolf rode until he came to Warmbrooks, he had good welclome from Hallgerð, and not bad one from Glum
 
Hann sagði Hallgerði að faðir
hennar hefði hann á braut rekið og bað hana ásjá.
He said to Hallgerð that her father had sent him away and he asked her for her help 
 
Hún svaraði honum því að
hún kveðst honum engu mega heita um þarvist hans fyrr en hún fyndi Glúm.
She replied to him that she could not promise anything before she had seen Glum

"Fer vel með ykkur?" segir hann.
"Goes well between you two" says he

"Vel er um ástir okkrar," segir hún.
"Well"  because we love each other  says she

Síðan gekk hún til máls við Glúm og lagði hendur upp um háls honum og mælti:
"Skalt þú veita mér bæn þá er eg mun biðja þig?"
Then she went to speak with Glum and put her arms round his neck, asked "Would you grant a favour if I asked it of you"

"Veita mun eg þér ef þér er sæmd í," segir hann, "eða hvers vilt þú biðja?"
" I will grant it if honour is in it for you" says he "What do you want"

Hún mælti: "Þjóstólfur er rekinn í braut vestan þaðan og vildi eg að þú
leyfðir honum að vera hér. En eg vil þó eigi þvert taka ef þér er lítið um."
She spoke "Thjostolf has been driven away from the West and I wanted you to let him stay here but I shall not take it badly if you (think) but little of it"

Glúmur mælti: "Nú er þér fer svo vel skal eg veita þér þetta en seg að hann
skal í brautu verða ef hann tekur nokkuð illt til."
Glum replied "Now when it goes so well with you (you are so reasonable) I shall grant this but I say he shall be away (out of it) if he turns to evil

Hún gengur til Þjóstólfs og segir honum.
She goes to Thjostolf and tells him (this)

Hann svaraði: "Nú fer þér enn vel sem von var að."
He replied "Now it will go well for you as it was expected

Síðan var hann þar og sat á sér um hríð en þar kom að hann þótti þar öllu
spilla.
Afterwards he was there and restrained (it says sat on) himself but it came to that he seemed
to spoil everything
 
Tók hann þá að hlífast við engan mann nema við Hallgerði en hún
veitti honum aldrei eftirmæli þá er hann átti við aðra.
He began to be unrestrained with no one
except Hallgerð but (even) she did not grant (him) indulgence when he had
dealings/arguments with others
 
 
 Þórarinn bróðir
Glúms taldi á við hann er hann lét Þjóstólf þar vera og kvað illa gefast
mundu og fara enn sem fyrr ef hann væri þar. Glúmur svaraði vel og brá þó á
sitt ráð.
Thorarinn the brother of Glum talked to him when he let Thjostolf stay there
and said it would turn out badly (ill would come from it) and go as before if he were there
Glum replied well  (he was polite??/reserved)
but got on with his own business   - i.e. ignored Thorarinn
 
I might have done more accurately if I had permitted myself to use a dictionary or two
but I wanted to try - to do it differently
